Just finished perusing the DIY Advanced Model Railroad Signaling Electronics book by Richard Kerr.  The author's premise is "getting the computer out of the train room".  HOWEVER, it is pretty sophisticated using 555 timers, diodes, capacitors, relays etc to make things work.  There is nothing plug and play about this (however the two main building block boards are available for you to build. )  His circuit schematics and interconnections rivals some of the plans I have from RR signal departments.  Bottom line, great material, but not for the faint of heart or a passing electronics acquaintance.
