I have often wondered who, and how many voices active on this forum, have, or have had, or are planning to have, or are in the process of constructing, an actual layout.
Several of us have been active on the "What did you do on your layout today" thread, and that is surely a good thing. But overall, given all the voices participating on OGR, I wonder who is active in that way in our hobby.

I have one, and I imagine that a majority of us here do - of one kind or another.
I do also imagine that a substantial minority - but still a minority - do not.
I wonder what the figure is? Maybe that has already been properly researched. Don't know.

Building the turntable several years ago (a flat hides the electrical panel now).
Don't ever do this; write the check, order a nice one, and never look back. Horrible experience.
It does, however, work.
I have a layout, still working on it, "not quite a complete redo" thread. Spring is here, summer is closer than you think, and I have lots of chores, traveling and fishing and sailing to do. So, I will rerail in the fall.

I have always enjoyed pics and story line from your layout. Yes I have one. Nothing like yours. New one in the works but for now this one has to do. As for updates other then Kadee conversions I am pretty much at my left and right limits as what I can do to it. Ok some minor things, but I trying to give myself more incentive to build new one by doing nothing to current one. At least that's the idea. If any thing just been doing vids

Yes I do and have a train room layout with many projects under the table to complete. I spend winter in the train room and this year ;
I'm actually going to abuse myself further this summer 
and work on a G scale train in the yard . 
I can (Hopefully ) have trains in the summer and the winter

My first ever, the Appalachian, Tampa, & Santa Fe was started in fall of 09 and dismantled in Aug of 2012 due to a move. Had a lot of fun with it as you can imagine.
Am now working on our club's new layout that is housed in a 'Train Station' in the western NC mountains, Buffalo Creek Vacations where folks can come stay in a caboose or nice log cabin and soon run trains with us on the premises!

I still have a long way to go with the scenery adding more trees, details, structures, signals etc.
Still a novice, I find my more recent work more "convincing" to the point I will likely tweak things I did at the beginning.
Scenery has gone at a s.l.o.w. pace which has been interrupted by running trains and my 3 kids and what they bring with their lives.
As the're getting older I'm finding a bit more time for the layout. Having said that, I kinda like the idea of the layout never really being finished. It seems the added details are endless.
I've recently made more significant progress making it a bit more photo worthy.

As for photo worthy. I think we have all been there. We can be our own worst critics. The ballasting of the fast track really sticks out. Many others have done it here and done right can really blend in to the point of hardly noticing it.
Thanks for the compliment on the winter theme. Reality there are some better ones out there. SIRTs winter module is great. Same as Mark Strittmatter layout and I like what you did with the mountain. I think reality is that winter themed layouts are tough to create just due to the variety of conditions. Partly frozen ponds and streams, Ice effects, Slush and packed snow on roads, and so on to be really convincing..

I had numerous layouts from 1994 to 2015. Now I'm planning a tiny 3 X 12 layout with 0-27 curves, This layout was in 2008.
Thanks everyone. I really appreciate and admire the efforts you all put into your layouts. I'm confined to an 8' X 10' space for now but hope to gain more when the kids are all gone and we move into a one-story home (ranch) with a big, long basement.

Your layout is outstanding! Do you have a YouTube page? Also, I do have a layout but most of the layouts I see on here are nearly complete. Mines is just in the beginning stages of scenery. Many parts still are showing bare plywood

My layout is my club layout, the GOLDEN GATE LIONEL RAILROAD CLUB. A modular layout that is displayed throughout the San Jose/San Francisco bay area a dozen times or more a year. Here are some recent photos, including those at the Hiller Aviation Museum "Planes and Trains" show this past week.

It is simple, but it is mine and I have fun with it. The first few shots are underneath my bridges, which explains the poor lighting. My first real attempt at scenery, so I may start doing more of that around the layout. Or, I may knock it all down and start over. Just never know.

3 or 4 boxes with the flaps cut off turned upside down and openings were cut in the ends just large enough for the trains to pass through to retain the box strength. ( Obviously if you cut the ends all the way off a box just flattens.
The boxes were then glued to the layout top/pink foam with hot glue.
Newspaper wads were taped to the tops of the boxes, to remove any "boxy" shape and the tunnel portholes were hot glue to the box ends and layout top and any gaps were filled with styrofoam pieces.
Then Woodland Scenics plaster cloth was laid over the newspaper and boxes down to the base of the mountain.
After drying, I watered down some drywall spackle into a paste and brushed it onto any of the holes showing through the plaster cloth. Then let that dry.
With the exception of the areas I wanted snow on, the whole mountain was painted with Woodland Scenics c1218 stone gray liquid pigment.
Rocky outcroppings were accentuated by brushing them with Woodland Scenics c1219 slate gray liquid pigment to give some contrast.
The nice thing about these liquid pigments is that they're water soluble. I diluted them fairly well and they become more of a wash that absorbs into the plaster leaving a nice flat earthy finish. A little bottle goes a long way diluted.
I brushed on some white glue and added woodland scenics snow to the desired areas. I sprayed 50/50 water glue mix and added a second layer of snow as needed.
Then a little hot glue on the pine tree bases and poked them through the plaster cloth as desired, and spinkled them with snow as well.
On the right side of the tunnel porthole in my first photo you can see some black felt sticking out I didn't secure properly.
The whole right side of the mountain is not sceniced, and has a piece of removable black felt going across it secured with push pins into the boxes and plaster coth. This allows me to be able to clean the track within the tunnel as well as fix any derailments that occur inside.
NOTE: The portholes visible in my photos 8 and 9 are too close to the curve. This is one of those " I would have done that differently" learned from my first layout experiences. STRAIGHTS ONLY IN AND OUT OF TUNNELS.
If you look closely you can see where I had to "modify" one of the portholes to keep the cab of my scale berkshire from hitting it
All in all, it may sound like alot of steps, but the mountain was easy, went up fast, and ended up looking much better than I expected. Its far from the most realistic, especially when compared to some of the real scenery experts on the forum, but I think it gives the desired effect.

After viewing so many magnificent layouts posted by so many of our extremely talented O Gauge brothers and sisters I hesitate to post anything but in the interests of offering some examples of rudimentary layout construction I offer the following:
The first is my 8x20 O gauge layout; the second is my 4x8 S Gauge layout, while the third is my tiny 3x4 all tinplate layout. The fourth and final entry is our family Christmas 6x12 combination O and Standard Gauge layout.
WOW Guys. We have a layout but, I give up.
Your stuff is so nice compared to my table for running trains for me and the 3 year old grandson I am using on a LOW budget.
I am blown away by some of the work. Makes me want to do more.
Bet you would not want Jordan to come over and run your trains! 
Yes, and a lot of people here are aware of it too. It isn't all pretty and finished looking, but I'm working on it almost every day. It won't have a lot of buildings, lights or accessories. It won't even have that many trees or people. The layout is all about the trains. Over 3000' of track, more than 300 switches, on three levels.
Still have to do something with those walls. But the layout is good for now.

Yes, I have a layout. It is unfortunately asleep in Picasa.
But I enjoy viewing all of the new and older layouts.
I have an extra room for my trains, used to be a bedroom. These are some of my set-up photos from a few months ago, however layout is almost finished.
I am using tubular track and switches, mostly 042 track on the lower level and 027 track on the upper level. Have gone over to Ross Custom switches as they seem to work better with my large steam engines I have. Still have some Gargraves switches but am working on replacing them with Ross Custom switches as time goes by. I have a few MTH engines so I am using MTH Z-1000 transformers with my MTH & Williams trains.

Mike thanks. Not sure about story lines other then about the engines. I know some would rather here engine sounds. Steam is cool but for the most part I like listening to music when I run them. Music to the vids depends on mood. The hard part is syncing the music with the video, or should I say the vid with the music. Now if I can only figure out how to add effects like Erik does with his pics or come close to the quality of his videos. Then I am getting somewhere. Ultimately its about having fun and working with what you have..

Ok here goes. Been at it for a year. Learned a lot on here. My layout with 50 things started not much scenery done but hey I sure have fun running trains even if the plywood is all showing where I thought there would be trees and mountains already 
and when I retire in 19 months look out then!

Hey Roger, as long as your having fun, that's all that matters! Don't get wrapped up in hype or this and that. Just have FUN!

Really jealous of the "Big" layouts on the forum but given the available space I'm having a blast building my first layout since I was a teenager. One side of the layout is much further along than the other but it is a work in progress.
Good afternoon,
I am working on the last section of the north end elevated loop. Roadbed, pillar paint and side rails.. Should have it done tonight and back installed tomorrow. Humid out so things are drying slow.
Then on to the south end. Slow but sure and getting better on every section. By the time I am done I will know what I am doing.
My layout is essentially complete. (It was the cover article in the January OGRR magazine.) Much of my enjoyment comes from the building process, so I'm considering totally dismantling the current bedroom-sized layout, and creating a new one. Haven't made the final decision yet, but it appears likely that building will win out over running. Here's my current track diagram of the new layout, subject to change as I continue to rethink the process.

I am currently on hold with a permanent layout. I have not had one since the '90's but had always done a Christmas layout(simple track under the tree) for a good number of years. I had gotten the need to remedy all of this last year but got extremely sidelined. My mother had gotten sick and was in the hospital in late October. Things were not good after a good bit, but she wasn't in bad health. I had resolved to work on a Christmas layout for last years Christmas even got all the lumber and other stuff for it. What wound up happening was all my time was spent with my siblings to go see mom. In December it was rough but she had been getting better, they had to do a trach and she couldn't even speak to us at Christmas. She did get the trach out and was able to speak to us once more. Eventually she had gotten transferred to a get better facility and went to rehab in January. She was doing so well, and we had actually had a nice Sunday out in the warm air February 19th. She died that Tuesday morning.
So right now sort of really tied up with estate stuff, what and where things will be moving to but I do plan on finishing that Christmas layout some time in the coming weeks, just to have something to run around on a few tiny straight pieces and some O42 curves. Until I get to a new place I won't know exactly what I am going to be building, but I can always dream of that. I am hoping to at least have something around 15'(or better) by 18'(or better) but naturally will be clueless until everything gets done. In the meantime, I will tinker with track plans, ask advice, and maybe even upload some of them to see what others think and maybe even inspire.
There are some really nice layouts pictured above on this new thread....Ricko has a really nice layout and Sam.s picture of the War Bonnet Silver passenger train is beautiful...Many clever fun to run layouts....Thanks for posting these magnificent 3D moving pieces of Creative, Imagineered Art, full of thoughts of the Real Trains running right in front of you.....Fantastic....This is a Fun Hobby....

I post this in hope that the folks who may not have magnificently crafted and detailed layouts might be encouraged to post photos of their setups. It can't get much worse, eh. Lucky for me I got no shame.
Layout was originally engineered to be a carpet central on a table with an ever changing track arrangement. Then I decided I wanted something more "sophisticated," but I wanted to be able to watch a train go 'round while I work on a track plan. So after I removed the track and accessories and vacuumed the carpet I set up a loop with a passing siding. Unfortunately no horizontal surface is safe from my tendency to chaos. Yes, the train can be and does run, and I enjoy watching it.

I am really enjoying this thread. The posts have been alternately inspiring, encouraging and in some cases validating my meager efforts. Texas Pete's picture motivated to me to post here as well.
Since I only have my iPad with me, and I don't have my photos in the "cloud," I am limited to what I have on this device. The last pic is cross posted from another thread about messy work benches. It was a temporary set up for my wife's Hogwarts Express and the visiting grandchildren on some of the benchwork brought from a layout I started in our previous home and cut down to cram into an extra bedroom. Everything was intended to be kid friendly. Still there years later.
The first three pics are of my S gauge "operating" layout that a good friend and I have set up in our state capitol building for over thirty years. Don is the master builder, and I am his long time apprentice and the one with the trains. We have also displayed it at local and regional train shows. It allows me to get some of my AF and other S gauge trains out of boxes to stretch their legs.

I like your advice above. I originally scratch built my first turntable like Mike CT years ago before I began manufacturing them. About a year ago I ripped out that first scratch built table to install one of my production units (it was painfull to do, after spending all that time building it) but having the production unit with all the bells and whistles was a no brainer to do. There is nothing like running a turntable that is smooth and accurate, plus looks great!

Boy I know that feeling well. 3 kids all school age and yes it doesn't get any better as they get older( Music lessons, Band, and other after school activities, nd other life issues) , . Some work while they were in school but mostly at night after everybody went to bed. Have a huge backlog of Kadee conversions now as lately all I want to do is sleep. Layout looks good try to post some more pics to see what you have.
Here is my layout. It is a 10 x 14 . Love to have a bigger one but my kids needs room to play also. 
Luvindemtrains mentioned (and thank you, sir, for your approval of my layout) his having bare plywood. My intention in suggesting participation on this thread was to encourage and invite a sharing of ideas and accomplishments that benefit us all by seeing what we have had and may still have, or have begun. Exposed plywood is part of the fun and accomplishment (see middle photo above).
The thread inviting "what did you do on your layout today" is popular because it has us all sharing what we have worked at presently. However, some of us no longer do work on a layout, aside from maintenance or operating, or have had one we don't change but enjoy just the same.
Sometimes, a layout is simply enjoyable to look at, realizing, "Hey, that's all mine!" Enjoy what you have. Or had. Then, come tell us about it here, if you please.
All of the layouts shown along this thread so far, are amazing in their diversity of creativity and enjoyment of our hobby. Clearly, a lot of guys are having a whole lot of fun. One of the many fine examples of loads of fun would be seeing Barry's layout, which was a particular surprise for me because I had never realized he had one. (May we see more, Barry?)
Shown here is, however, a place on my layout I did change not-too-long-ago, which was mentioned in a Run of OGR. As our editor pointed out, I wanted to open up the view from the aisle into the RR service yard, so I changed plenty of what was around it. "What was" is shown in the top two photos; then, you can see the same area stripped. Next, comes how it is nowadays.

Your layout is outstanding! Do you have a YouTube page? Also, I do have a layout but most of the layouts I see on here are nearly complete. Mines is just in the beginning stages of scenery. Many parts still are showing bare plywood

Let me encourage you to post when you have anything to share, even the empty plywood platform. All of us, if I may say so, like seeing layouts, even when they are simple plywood with all the details still in the hobbyist's imagination. It would be fun for us to see, along with you, how layouts have been, are, or are becoming.
These shots, here , show you one particular neighborhood in my layout, named "V-valley," that changed distinctly several times...
