I'll write one for you right now.  

JohnGalt's LC+ companion:  

1. place engine on the track.  2, apply power to track.  3. turn on remote.  4.  have fun.

In seriousness, though, there is a lot of things about LC/+ that would be interesting to write about, unfortunately all of it is general information that applies to all other model trains, or is stuff that is so technical that it applies only to folks that like to dig into the guts of things and learn how they work.   For the average user,  I think the most confusing aspect of LionChief will be the universal remote, but I suspect that it will come with more than adequate documentation out of the box.

Hi BNSF-Matt - I have a very well done You Tube Video, that will be published to You Tube on January 8th., 2016 at about 2:00 AM EST. Below is the title page. I am doing the final edit process at this time. I just took a iMovie Class at the Apple Store and learned all kinds of new procedures, that will be used in this video. I just picked up my Atlantic Coast Line FT set. Nice looking set. There are some oddities and comments I have however:

1. Lionel has been using clear snap-in porthole lenses forever. That's how they showed the FT's in the catalog. For some reason, they ended up blacked out. The portholes are solid opaque black. Very strange looking.

2. Like most Lionel diesels with the smoke fluid catch basin under the shell (officially called a smoke manifold), it leaks fluid out all over the place. The smoke fluid will sheet out, working its way along the inside of the shell. I sealed the perimeter of the manifold where it contacts the shell, with gas can sealant which is just about the only thing that stops smoke fluid from leaking. Works great now.

3. The Lionchief FT's continue the ongoing, and odd practice that Lionel has of equipping engines with magne-traction as an undocumented feature. The GP7's and RS-3's also have magne-traction. Even more strangely, all four axles on the non-powered unit also have powerful magne-traction.

4. I like the horn. It's a nice single note horn. Much better than the raspy multi-chime horn on the older FT's with Trainsounds.

Hi GregR - Below is a photo of the blacked out portholes from my Rio Grande, could you please post a photo of your Atlantic Coast Line, so we can see how it looks with the purple on the ACL. I am a toy train layout and my wife is from Colorado, so I will make this work.

Someday this issue will become a Lionel Trivia Question, Who made the changes to the FT - Line. This side of the Pacific or the other side of the Pacific Ocean?

Here is the ACL Lionchief Plus set. As you can see, the portholes are blacked out also. Wish they had just provided the clear windows like they showed in the catalog. That is not an unreasonable expectation. Making them black is probably just a temporary measure while they rework the tooling to fill in the holes with plastic as part of the shell, to cut corners on cost. Then they can just rubber stamp something resembling windows on the side.

Picked up the Santa Fe FT LionChief+ set at my local train shop this afternoon. I plan on getting the "B" unit in the next few weeks.

  1. They look beautiful and they are a lot larger than I thought they would be.
  2. They sound fantastic and the horn is great.
  3. The portholes are indeed dark, but I'm ok with it.
  4. The one and only disappointment I have is that both engines share the same road number #164. Was this to save money? the Lionel website states #164 and #161, but they are both indeed #164.

If they do hot have the clear port hole windows, you will have to custom make them.
