I have been looking for some "modern"6 axle diesel locomotives, specifically a Conrail, BNSF, NS, CSX or ATSF. I'd want it to be 2017 or newer Legacy models- aka Blue tooth, IR sensors, etc...- but if it was the right one(like an ATSF Kodachrome SD40t-2 from 2004) I'd be fine with TMCC. However, currently prices are a bit too high IMO.

I've found some really great looking Weaver diesels, but they rarely have TMCC. They're conventional with dual flywheel can motors, electronic reverse unit(DCRU by QSI) and have "QS-1 sound".

Are these difficult to convert to ERR? I've done research on converting Lionel, Atlas and K-line units, w/ and w/o TMCC and/or odyssey/TaS/Cruise, to ERR- but haven't ever looked into MTH proto 1 or Weaver conventional units.

Are there any issues/added difficulties in converting a Weaver unit such as the one mentioned above to ERR?

Also, this is just a general question to which I haven't found an answer: ERR's cruise M is described as "Legacy compatible"...

-Does that just mean it works with Legacy?

-Can locos with Cruise M be MU'd(lashed-up) with a Legacy unit put in TMCC/32 step mode?

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated!!!

Any engine with a DC motor(s) can be upgraded to TMCC or PS3 if there is room. For TMCC you want a ERR Cruise Commander. Cruise M is for TMCC engines that don't have cruise but Lionel modular boards. Unlikely a TMCC engine will lashup with a Legacy engine unless it has the same wheel diameter and gear ratio. Same for two TMCC engines.

Thanks guys!! I greatly appreciate the advice- this greatly expands the pool of diesel locomotives that I would consider for purchase. Thanks for the correction regarding the Cruise M- that's the one I had previously researched the most when I wanted to upgrade my Lionel Amtrak Dash 9 w/ TMCC, no odyssey & K-line F40PH w/ TMCC, cruise.

This question is a totally different animal than my original one as it doesn't deal with conventional to TMCC: How is the difficulty level for installing ERR in MTH proto 1 and proto 2 locos? Specifically:

MTH Premier Amtrak AEM-7 20-5505-1 w/ Proto 1 from 1999

MTH RK Amtrak F59PHI Surfliner diesel 30-4198-1 from 2008(3 volt)

Not sure if it's relevant but the F59PHI has an issue- lost speed control and I believe sound about 8 months ago. I'd rather not upgrade the repair or upgrade either to Proto 3 as I rarely use DCS anymore. I'm most interested in the possibility of converting the F59PHI to ERR. Thoughts?

Gentleman, thanks again so much for your help. Definitely have some growing to do!

Assuming the diesels have plastic bodies it would be pretty simple. Gut the existing electronics and install a Cruise Commander. Add a Railsounds board if you want sound. You can use the existing couplers on the PS1 engine but you will have to replace the ones on the PS3 engine as their impedance is too low for TMCC electronics.

Metal bodied engines including steam, you have to deal with an antenna issue but with plastic its not a problem.
