Any of the TMCC boards need a chuff source, typically for factory stuff, it was a microswitch on either the smoke lever (mechanical smoke units), or an axle cam (fan driven smoke units). Note that if you go for 4-chuffs, you won't have synchronized smoke as the mechanical smoke unit only does one chuff.

In order to get four chuffs/rev, you have to add a chuff switch that is triggering at that rate.  My personal choice, for obvious reasons, is my Chuff-Generator, it allows you to program the chuffs to any rate you desire.
