I just acquired an older Train America Studios Universal Command Upgrade Board, and I installed it in a Williams Trainmaster. It seems to work well for forward and reverse (haven't added lights yet), but I'm having trouble trying to connect an ERR railsounds commander (the new single-board). I even tried connecting the jumper wire to the number 20 pin, and another wire to the number 24 pin, and connecting them both to the purple serial data cable, but when I power up, the sound still comes on immediately, and the horn and bell won't work with the Cab-1L remote, even though they work off the transformer buttons.

Is there any way to interface these boards so the TAS bord will operate the Railsounds commander?

Thanks.

Trainman2,       Have you given a try to communicate with ERR ?    Send an email to Ken, with ERR, and he will reply back in a short time, usually the next day.  Any questions you have are best directed to Ken, as I have had to do sometime.  I do know that have electronics to do the same, the other way around.  They have a very reasonable command unit you utilize to operate TAS sound boards.  As stated, email Ken and ask him about TAS interface with ERR Railsounds Commander.  They do make a stand alone RS board that may be the way for you to pursue.

I've used the new ERR sound board with standard TMCC R2LC products and they've always worked fine wired as you describe.

I thought you had one you needed the booster with?  It may be an issue with Serial data strength with the newer RS 5.0 from ERR.  Even some  of their older boards won't work with it unless you use a small booster circuit.  G

That's only if you use the older ERR Cruise Commander M, clearly not the case here.  I've never seen where the R2LC couldn't drive just the new ERR sound board with no other serial connection.

John, Not completely true.  The older version Cruise CDR had issues too.

Interconnecting the Railsounds Commander and a Cruise Commander, board version

3.4 or earlier (like the one shown in Figure 1), requires a special buffer cable assembly

as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2 – Buffer cable assembly

Also the Mini-EX despite working with older RS board will not work with the new RS5.0 ERR board.  Hence the Dummy loco controller board was created.

Granted, It may be some other issue with his TAS board.   G

John, I do not see how we know that for sure.  You made a statement you never seen an ERR RS board not work with Standard TMCC products (what ever that means).  Yet we know that not all combinations do work.  Some issues with IR tethers and CCM, you had an issue with non IR and CCM, Early CC, etc...  So this TAS unit may not be fully compatible either.  May even matter which R2LC code is used.

So if it is wired correctly he only has a few choices.  Try a different R2LC, Try a different RS board, or build the booster and see if that resolves it.  G
