Ever heard of a warranty on a used item ?

I wish! I would say it sounds like that shop has a good repair tech and is very confident about what they sell. FWIW, on our club picnic and layout in October the two best all day runners ended up being the PS-1 locomotives, 1 steamer and 1 diesel. Let us know what happens!

I thought the same thing....but they dont have a tech per say in the shop....they have someone they use. I said to the guy in the shop I have never heard of this and he said to me that he wants to sell me my next engine...not just this one. I thought this was great....bet you can guess where I will make my next engine purchase !

In my book great customer service should always be recognized and rewarded by spreading it by word of mouth. It's a dying art, I'm afraid. Always nice to hear there's a place where it survives.

I've never heard of that sort of policy myself, but kudos to the shop owner who is offering it.

Seems to me if shop owners were smart they'd offer at least a limited warranty , maybe 60 days on used items. Seems like a good way of getting business.

With the way the manufacturers have gone with their warranties, this is a good move on a shop owners part. A lot of LHS have new old stock that depending if it's a couple of years old, may not have any manufacturer warranty left when they sell it. If they check it out good, a used engine can be a fairly safe bet putting a warranty on it by a shop, the occasional failure I don't think would offset the improved sales by customers that return for their next purchase.

I haven't either.....but if the shop offers it....GREAT! It's not like there is never a warranty on a used item....cars, phones all kinds of used items are offered with a warranty....now trains!

There is one shop I found in So Cal that will give a 1 year warranty on some used items. Takes the gamble out of buying used engines. He has excellent customer service and fair prices.

Have to believe the shop owner is a gambler, and is betting that the engine won't go belly up w/in the one year warranty period. If it does, I'd be willing to bet the purchaser will get his money back, but not a repaired item. The cost of repairs (read - new boards) would be prohibitive.

I think you need to give that shop a plug and tell us who it is. Kudos to them.

It is a good idea. Next to farmers I think that people who buy used trains (I have) are the worlds biggest gamblers.

I had a similar experience at Catoctin Mountain Trains in Thurmont, MD. I had purchased a Lionel N&W Class A from them that they had purchased at an estate sale. I brought it back in a couple of weeks later with a couple of small problems and the owner (Paul) wrote it up as a warranty repair. His repair tech checked it out and resolved the problems at no cost to me.

Its really nice to have shops like that.....thats what keeps some of us from shopping on line

It would be a wonderful thing. There was a time not that long ago when a good hobby shop would give such a warranty. Mr. Miller, I'm sure that you can remember those days just as I.

I for one still offer a two warranty on any piece that leaves my workbench. I'm just an old man living in the past, I guess.
