Do what makes you happy. I have lost count of how many cars I have weathered and sold. Its the main reason my layout will never be finished. Now I am doing some of my engines. All rattle can spray and adhesive powders. MTH Niagara shown. My goal was to weather as in service not at the end of service.

That 5412 looks great if you model a Diesel graveyard.  Excellent rot on the lower belt line!
