I currently operate on a 5x9 table and I am in the planning and track purchasing phase for a larger layout. I would appreciate any thoughts on sidings ,stub tracks, crossovers wyes etc ,suggestions or help with a material list. I am not familiar with scarm etc so I do my planning with pencil and paper.

Details layout area 16'x8' with a 30" walk area around the perimeter, 6' wide access to the room which is located in a finished basement.72" curve outer loop 48" inner.I currently have legacy and DCS operating systems with a Z 4000 and a Postwar ZW for power.I want to be able to operate 2 trains at once and would prefer to stay on the flat with no inclines or raised sections. With switching capabilities and some industries on the layout Attached is a rough sketch of my idea so far.

Thanks in advance for any help or input.

Eldon,

1st welcome to the OGR you will love it here.

Nice simple layout, I would however set up switches between the 2 loops, if you want to power and run them separately, use a siding power control type switch.

You will want to set up in DCS Blocks any way, so this will be no big deal.  Remember to use 13 or less track joins when setting up each one of your DCS blocks. Engineer with as many 30" pieces of FasTrack as you can get into your layout design.

Also run Legacy drops from your TIU Black channels ( Not thru the TIU however) and directly form the Legacy Base to the opposite outside rail from the DCS Black channel drops, to assure max Legacy signal.

Have fun

Thanks Dave

What I need most right now is a plan then a material list then I can start stockpiling track and switches for the future build.

You may want to consider 072 outside and 060 inside.   Go to Lionel.com and look at the catalog (or if you have a Lionel catalog with Fastrack in it.   Its either quarter curves or half curves the wont come out right with 048.  Hope this helps!

You may want to make your inner loop reversing, using two switches. Then you have 2 approaches to your center section where your city/industry can grow.
