Hi All,

I've got a prewar Lionel 6 wheel motor with the 3 way E unit that cycles to the next phase every time I try to slow it down. It will run forward or backward at too high a speed to maneuver any turns, so when I let off the throttle, it kicks into neutral. I've used both W-D and contact cleaner on the points and drum, which seems to help slightly. Now this occurs when there is no strain on the motor. I have yet to mount it in a shell, so I can't say how it would react under a load. But I'm assuming it wouldn't help the situation, except keeping it on the tracks around the curves. Any suggestions for a remedy?

How much are you reducing the track voltage to slow it down?  What transformer are you using for power?  Can you make the locomotive run slow, or does it only start to run when higher voltage is applied making it start fast?

You might try putting it together and see if the added weight helps.
