Thomas doesn't seem to pop up enough on the forum, despite it's still immense popularity. Going into a little nostalgia myself (I'm a 90's kid), Thomas was a huge impact in my love of trains today. Despite it not being quite as charming as it was back then, it still gets today's youth into trains, which is always a good thing.

Edward 001

Overall, I'd love to see Lionel do Edward for the Thomas lineup, since he was my favorite character personally. He was the kind and experienced type who always gave good advice despite being older and not as strong as the other characters, especially in the older series. He just made a great role model.

So, for those who grew up with Thomas, or simply still find interest in it today, who was your favorite character?

If you look at the link above for the weekend photo fun you will see some pics I posted from a recent day out with Thomas event. I had a few of the Thomas characters running with the LionChief controls for the kids to run the trains. They loved it.

Wish Lionel would make Gordon and Henry in LionChief.

Toby would be nice as well.

Have an HO Edward sitting on a shelf trying to figure out how I could do one up in O gauge to go with the other engines.

The Thomas line is fun and so many kids enjoy it hoping Lionel well make more or perhaps some more characters in a plastic toy about the size of the Lionel trains.

The kids get a kick out of the Cranky the Crane character the Play school one in the photos has remote control and sounds.

I'm kind of partial to the following Thomas engines:

Thomas, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, Toby, Emily, Duck, Donald and Douglas, Bill and Ben, Oliver, Harvey, Fergus, Arthur, Murdoch, Molly, Rosie, Whiff, Stanley, Charlie, Bash and Dash, Ferdinand, Scruff, Belle, Stephen, Porter, Gator, Timothy, Diesel, Daisy, BoCo, Mavis, Arry and Bert, Salty, Diesel 10, Den, Dart, Paxton, Norman, Sidney, Neville, Billy, Hank, Flora, Logan, Derek, Dennis, Winston, Stafford, Marion, Stepney, Spencer, Hiro, Connor, Caitlin, and Lady.

Then, while Lionel has the tooling, they can make sets using these prototypes.

I'm not sure Stepney would be popular enough to warrant Lionel to make him, but the others likely would.

I'm a little surprised anyone likes Bash, Dash, Ferdinand, and Charlie. Everyone I talk with despise them, and they're not exactly fans of Neville, Fergus or Dennis. Oh well, each to their own.

No favorites here.  But I was thrilled to see my kids take a liking to Thomas back in the '90s.  I think the whole show was well done, and it taught kids important lessons.

I would like to add this Behind the Scenes link I found a few years ago and bookmarked.  It is very interesting to see how they did the show.  I apologize if anyone else has shared the same link before me.  I haven't seen it here.

I thought Stepney might be good, because if it had an interchangeable face with the smokebox door, it would appeal to British Collectors, as it is a real engine.

That is true. I wouldn't mind a Stepney one, but it's a shame he's never really on the show anymore.

I admit, being a New York Central Hudson fan, Connor is one of the newer characters who quickly grew on me.

Would love to see Spencer done in a somewhat scale looking version.

Here are some that I wish Lionel would make and that I have created while waiting.

Hiro plastic model

Spencer Lego toy a bit small but perhaps could power it and put it in the background.

Henry green from the Lionel Hogwarts engine think that Lionel could modify this and offer it and Gordon as LionChief models with little work to modify from the Hogwarts version.

The Lionel Arry Bert and Diesel is behind. not sure if  I want to upgrade to the LionChief models as the kids might not want to run these guys.

Winston from wooden one that I added railway wheels to and pulls along behind the freight cars

Bulgy Bus, Bertie Bus and Terrance orange the tractor.

Trevor the traction engine and George the Steam roller

Duncan the narrow gauge engine

Donald and Douglas the Scottish twins

Toby and Henrietta

Mavis

Boco the green diesel

Gordon and sodor mail coaches for Percy

Update for us older guys: Having 4 grand kids ( 2 to 7 years old) and seeing Thomas and friends, one of the newer children shows is a more modern train series they now watch called Chugington which has a more up to date railroad with diesels, bigger yards, turnouts and a two line mains. Kids these days are keeping up with technology, as we all should, and showing me how to use an ipad.

I had the sound muted on my PC when I first saw that video. Just watching the words, the tune that was going through my head was ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man" (can be heard on the opening credits of Duck Dynasty).

Try it, it almost works!  LOL

Funny you mention Edward,  iv made a o gauge model of him from a lionel James!

I would be remiss in not contributing here ... AFAIK the first "Thomas" iteration of trains was actually an O Gauge clockwork made by Hornby in 1966... unfortunately they didnt quite secure the licensing in time ! ( LOL)

So it only appeared in one production run before the all plastic bodied version had a "Facelift" literally and reappeared the next year with a plain boiler front

Hornby Percy Set !  ( Black boiler front with inset face )

Annnd the last clockwork O gauge set made by Hornby ... the "Percy" without the face ( red boiler front)

I missed the "Thomas" boat by a few years but did work in a model train store in high school where I became all-too familiar with all of the different characters when panicked parents would come in looking for a last minute gift or to replace their child's most beloved toy. Personally, I was always partial to Gordon since he was a 4-6-2 Pacific and had a tender.
