I sit here thinking first we had cab control in conventional. then we went to tmcc and dcs. then tmcc gave way to legacy cab-2.

now LCS is the new operating setup being built and also a MTH version.

so how long before LCS and the MTH mobile setup is obsolete and the new speak to your train layout becomes reality?

this isn't as far fetched as one might think the cell phones already have a talk function has bugs in it but yet it is already here and gets new features as it gets developed!

am just looking to see if anyone else is thinking hey why look at a device's push buttons that detract from watching my engines and cars roll by when I could do both at same time watching it happen and all I do is speak what I want to happen as in switch 10 change to diverging route. or engine hold at milepost 109. all one needs is a wi-fi enabled microphone to send to the command base

there you go Jon Z.  Mike R. and Mike Wolf the gauntlet has been sent to you lets see who thinks its remotely possible?

or is it already in the R&D teams hands?

so what do the rest of you think?

All the technology seems in place to get this to happen.  Except when the trains are running, it's quite noisy, so discerning the subtleties of commands might be difficult.

The best use of the technology would be the command "Oh, sh*t!!" to do an emergency shutoff of all power, as you see a high-speed collision about to happen.

Bob,

The voice tech is there, but at our level, its just "OK". But still getting better.

At one point, when it meets a high enough operating standard, this sounds very cool.

A better microphone, & automatic ambient noise level filters(public address systems)(or a program) would likely help a lot.

Just as a computer learns your voice, it should be able to recognize the repetitive mechanical rhythms quickly, and ignore them.

I imagine it will happen.  Maybe you just talk to your iPhone and it relays the commands.

I would like it to happen because I imagine it would attract new users and be somethign many would enjoy.  But I won't be buying . . .   I find it annoying enough when the locos sometimes randomly decided to talk (crewtalk).  I don't want to talk to my trains but instead control them the old-fashioned way.

Well since there are now 2 of these threads I thought I'd repost my response from the other one here as well.

I personally don't want to talk to my trains to run them.  Even the apps are not my first choice.  I prefer the physical controller whether the Cab2 or transformer.  But I do like the techie stuff so the app is fun to play with.

It's in the R&D team's hands.  It took me forever to move to TMCC from conventional.  I'm just now moving to Legacy.  But as for talking to the trains, not me.  Although I'm pretty sure I could set up something to do it now with one of my older Macs.  Apple had speech to command software years ago.  I played around with it for a while, commanding my Mac to open and close apps and stuff.  It was fun, but only understood me about 2/3s of the time.  With TMCC commands published, it wouldn't take much to get a program to take the voice and translate them to TMCC commands.  But I don't know the programming language needed, nor care enough to learn to play with it.  What I rather have is a controller like this:

MartyE... I originally had this post for the Lionel command forum and then changed it  to the 3rail forum and some how it posted to both!

am guessing I zigged when I should have skipped??  I would delete the other one in lionel forum but am afraid it will delete from here as well.

my apologies to all on this issue I myself somehow created.

well I have one of those and the game software! the game works but have yet to be able to figure out how to use that controller there has to be a setting somewhere to switch from key board to it but so far I have not found it!

seeing your a young fella how about you making that controller run our trains!!

You'd need a device that could translate the commands from USB to the TMCC commands on serial.  I'd bet someone could do it with a Raspberry Pi.  But I'm not sure it's something I want to tackle at this time.  I'd rather get some kind of layout built first, then I might just mess with this...

I am reminded of an old Star Trek movie when the Enterprise goes back in time.  One of the crew members turns to an early 1980s computer and starts giving it voice commands.  It was funny.

Voice command of nearly everything is coming.  I think I prefer to use manual controls - at least for now.  I don't like to listen to other people talking on their cell phones at airports, etc.  Can you imagine what it will be like when everyone is giving computers voice commands in public places.

Joe

It might need a certain phrase to respond to. Something along the line of...

"Stop Dave, I'm afraid" (hal 9000, 2001 a space odyssey)

If there are replies in both threads Rich has to do the delete. Post replies lock the erase for the author.

Lee, I'll be sticking to conventional too, but an "O-crap" module between the power & track would nice.

Joe, I think maybe it was Scotty in the ST. IV, "transparent aluminum" scene.

Nearly as funny as Bones referring to modern medical practice as "barbaric" and "stone aged"

StPaul, Sinclair, What "game" is that from? A simulator?

Id think this might be easier to do on one of the PC control programs already out there. A lot would have to do with the type of transfer the controller uses. But I bet its redesigned keyboard for the most part. Swapping keyboard functions around is pretty easy once you figure out where its changed at.

It's a separate controller you can buy for Train simulators.  Google Raildriver and you should get it.  When I used to play MSTS, I was too poor to buy one, but always wanted one.  The Java train control people have drivers to allow you to use it with DCC, so getting it to work for TMCC shouldn't be too much harder, if you know what you're doing, which I do not.
