I am not a particularily handy person.  Today I came home and my wife told me the dryer was broken, with a flashing error code on the front.  We have had a lot of problems with this dryer over the years, and I was sure we were going to be going dryer shopping today.  Just for fun, I loooked up the error code to see if there was anyway to repair it.  The error code said that the controller board needed to be replaced.  After looking at a YouTube video, I realized all that I needEd to do was solder back on a wire that had come loose.  I learned how to solder working on Lionel trains, and that skill saved me from having to buy a new dryer today!

What life skills have you learned in model railroading that have helped you save money around the house?

I put a new belt on an old dryer of a friend of mine, one she'd inherited, to keep it

working longer.  I KNEW nothing about dryers, but had replaced a variety of auto

fan belts.  For the same person I did several light switch and electrical repairs, all

learned from playing with three rail since a kid.  In my old house before moving, I

did a number of plumbing repairs and upgrades, not train related, but based on "the

any idiot can do this" attitude learned from making trains work.  And the list goes on...
