I found a way to stop the lights from flicking on my 1960 passengers car. I wire each car together with a micro plug to look like a brake Line. Just unplug to separate to remove from layout.

I have done that with some of my diesel engines so they don't stall out when hooked together or when I use an unpowered B unit with a diesel horn it it. I found the small connectors & wires at a hobby shop that sells model airplane parts.

Nice trick, but I think a big capacitor should have the same effect, correct?
Downside of this approach is that when crossing from one power district to another, a short in either will overload the train line.
The capacitor and LED lighting is my choice for this task. If you are going to use a tether like that, I recommend using a PTC in the line for each car to avoid the issue of shorts during a derailment or crossing power districts.
When I have used a tether between cars, I like the Minitronics mini connectors, they're tiny and offer plenty of capacity for LED lighting.
