Here is something for you Santa Fe guys. I staged the line up the other day for a little fun and to snap some pics.

On the high line is the Lionel Anniversary set from 2001. This has got to be one of the biggest sets Lionel has ever made to fit in one set box. An ABBA and 7 passenger cars. Next to the retaining wall is the famous Lionel Northern #3751 from 2012 pulling the “California Limited”. In front of the tower we find the Lionel PA’s #54 from this year and finally the Lionel F3 ABBA Legacy’s #22 from 2018.

I am looking for passenger cars for the PA’s and F3’s and a Superbass “B” for the PA’s. My problem, even though they are scale, I am not a big fan of the new Lionel 21” cars. They are just too big, even for my layout. I prefer the aluminum 18” variety and they are tough to find.

Donald

3Rail, Wow, that’s a beautiful line up of Sante Fe motive power, a Steamer 3751 and those beautiful Sante Fe Diesels. Also, your layout is really neat. Please post more pictures of your train room and layout. I like the picture posted of the wall. I have the Lionel 18 inch El Capitan set pulled by the same F3 ABBA your showing. I to like the 18 inch aluminum cars by Lionel the best. The cars are out there, just post a want ad on the OGR Forum wanted to buy. Good luck, Happy Railroading Everyone... 883682FE-B420-46AD-A77C-6D307B8DB704FE320ECD-EEE6-4338-97B8-E7EC6D4EB2B2B14F839A-A794-4F63-84B2-A943A0613B3FDD694F9F-FE73-4642-A23C-B1BABDB9A980

3rd Rail,

Beautiful trains, beautiful backdrop, beautiful bench work!  Thanks for sharing.  NH Joe

Thank you for sharing.  I had the set from 2001.  I bought it as investment and never intended to open it.  Sold it at a loss of about 400.  Never opened, oh well.  I just got the plated MTH E8's and about 10 cars to go along with them.  The cars look amazing.  I have F units from Atlas, K-Line, MTH and Lionel.  Can't go wrong there.  I have a fairly large layout and the 21" cars I think would look too big.  Happy to stay with the existing cars I have even if they are not completely full size.  They look good.

Hey John. I see you follow my lead when it comes to toy trains as an investment.....”Buy high, sell low”. I bought my Anniversary set at York a number of years ago for 50% off. Never run. Donald

LOL I did not do that bad Donald.  I bought for 2k and sold for $1,600.

That is not too bad. I think my seller was motivated by a “family situation” as he put it (divorce).

I have been selling new scale size freight cars for most of this year that I bought 15 to 20 years ago and will never use (at an futile attempt to downsize just a little).  Most were $40 to $50 each. I was lucky to get half of that. Only a handful netted me close to what I paid.

Just how it is in today’s economy.

Currently, I am looking for SF 70’ passenger cars. Of course, they all seem to command premium prices!!

Donald, that is a great scene you posed them in, I too would love to see more of your layout, please do post some more shots of it.  I really love those SF units, the SF is my 2nd favorite road, SP is my first.  Been an SP fan for as long as I can remember but the SF comes a very close 2nd, sometimes I think its really a tie between the two.

Thanks for sharing and i hope you can find the cars your looking for.  I have 6 of the Lionel 18" Sunset Limited cars and they are beautiful, I'm with you, I don't really care for the 21" cars, they just seem to long to me.

Everyone have a great weekend.

Hey sptrainnut. Thanks.
If you have some time, do a search for the threads “Scenic Sunday’s”and look for me. I usually post near the top of the thread. Almost every Sunday for the last 6 or 7 weeks I post a series of pictures of my layout that did not make it to my feature article in last month’s OGR. I am working my way around the layout. I see you are also a digital subscriber. If you go to digital RUN 313, there are another 40 pics or so in the “bonus area”.

Some 15 years ago I picked up a used 2383 Santa Fe AB unit. I was hoping to p[ick up an A dummy but could never find it. I believe this Santa Fe unit was built late 1950's early 1960's. About 5 years ago I bought new a Williams Santa Fe AA unit and soon after I found a matching B unit that was not easy to find. The Williams unit appears to be a bit sleeker than Lionel's. I am adding a picture of the A unit engine so you can judge for yourself. IMG_1111IMG_1111
