Hey folks, this is a general suggestion for all members of the forum who post topics in the for-sale and/or wanted-to-buy sub-forum.  Could you please do us the courtesy of using the following formats:

  • If you want to sell/trade something, please prefix your thread title with "FS:".  For example, "FS:  Lionel 6-27410 VisionLine Tanker 3-pack"...
  • If you're looking to buy something, perhaps prefix your the title with "WTB:".  For example, "WTB:  Lionel 6-27410 VisionLine Tanker 3-pack"...

What I'm suggesting seemed more common years ago here, but now it seems more folks just post a regular title that could be interpreted as anything.  For those of us who use the RECENT POSTS column to navigate, we need to click on the title before we know if it's something for-sale/trade, or something somebody wants to buy.  Heck, for that matter, it could even be just a plain old discussion thread.    I realize it's just a click (which I'm sure makes the monthly stats look fabulous), but why not just let the title describe what's going on?  How about it, folks?  The more that members see folks using this element of courtesy, perhaps it will take hold as "normal protocol".

Thanks!!!

Excellent suggestion. I hope people read this and start to do it.

Not sure how much of a priority this is, but maybe Hoop.la has a feature for pre-populating a subject line as part of a form. The thought being that if you post to Want to Buy the subject line would already read "WTB: " and then the user would fill in the rest of the description. Might be an automated fix available v relying on lots of users to change habits. Just a thought.

I think it was discussed back with the last update to the forum, and maybe it wasn't possible with the software?  In any case it would be REALLY nice if the recent posts sidebar showed what forum the post was on.  Aside form helping people find or avoid FS/WTB threads, it would also help people to find or avoid Scale forum posts or whatever other sub boards they are, or are not, interested in.

Maybe our fearless leader could make a topic consisting of "checklist" of  suggestions, not requirements?

For instance

- manufacturer

- model number

- road name

- a link to the manufacturer's web page, if it exists?

Or maybe a topic combined  list of requirements and suggestions?

It always gets me when someone doesn't list a road name, it almost always is either Sante Fe or PRR, like there are no other roadnames that matter.

I have thought of creating a listing titled just "Trains" just to see if anyone gets the joke.

I'd agree with all but the web page part, I think if we are still talking subject lines, there isn't a way to include a web link in a thread title.

Of course this can go the other way too.  Way back when I had a very thorough listing of items in my title(probably 3-4 items), but it was deemed too long so the mods shortened it for me to something that meant nothing.

I understand the problem of having a multi-line wrap subject in the summary to the right of the page, so the balance is somewhere in between.
