Fortescue

If you don't regularly visit "What did you do on your layout today", there's very little chance you'll understand this topic.

Thanks Jim, inquiring minds want to know.

I'm still not sure that's where Fortescue came from. Why not ask Mitch? Go straight to the giraffe keeper's mouth.

I can't believe Mitch hasn't chimed in on this yet.....

I think he's just waiting for the right moment to pounce.

Probably putting a doosey of a post together right now.

Three Rails Are Better Than None

I'm sure Mitch will clarify, but I think Fortescue is also the track foreman on Mitch's Razorback Traction Co lines. I know he is essential to the road's operation in some form anyway (and yes, Mitch has lots of fun with his rail road and sometimes shares it with us!).

What tripped my trigger was the fact that Mitch always has the Aussie lingo on his threads, posts etc. And the company is the Aussie firm Fortescue Mining or something like that. Since Australia was settled by British convicts, it is probably from Great Britain.  Too subtle for the Forum.

As for "gi-raffe", I have to credit a chum of mine, E.O. Costello, author of a compendium of Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies references, who pointed out this quote from "A Hare Grows In Manhattan":

Bugs Bunny: Eh, what's up, dogs?

Dog #1: What is it?

Dog #2: Hey, maybe it's a gi-raffe, the gi-raffe!

Spike: Nah, that ain't no gi-raffe. A gi-raffe's got a long neck like this

[Pulls on Bugs' neck]

Spike: Hey, fellows, it's a rabbit.

Dog #1: Oh, a rabbit.

Spike: Dog pile on the rabbit!

Dogs: [as they all jump on top of Bugs] Dog pile on the rabbit! Dog pile on the rabbit! Dog pile on the rabbit!...

Bugs Bunny: [Hopping on top of the dog pile] Dog pile on the rabbit! Dog pile on the rabbit! Dog pile on the rabbit!

I agree, how do we edit that Wiki article to add Fortescue the gi-raffe? A long line of the Fortescue family. Gotta get him in the family tree there somewhere!

Obviously a close relative...

  • J. Fortescue, a nonexistent doctor created as a hoax, supposedly a founder of the International Board of Hygiene
