1. These Lionel Halloween and Christmas Sound Systems originally came in different holiday themed train sets. They're powered by a 9-volt battery, which is not included.

The Halloween System features a recording that's just under two minutes in length, and features maniacal laughter, howling wind, galloping horses, snarling animals, pipe organs, lightning strikes, screams, etc. Once complete, it repeats until turned-off. Here's the recording of this particular sound system:

The Christmas System features digital recreations of a dozen different Christmas carols, and plays for almost eight minutes before repeating. Here's a partial recording of this particular sound system:

Since these systems don't require track power, they can be placed just about anywhere on your layout. Ideally, the best place is inside a piece of rolling stock, such as boxcar, which provides a nice speaker baffle for the sound. They can also be placed inside a structure, and for that purpose, a small speaker baffle is included to help amplify the sound. No volume control is included, but the sound level is adequate when properly installed.

Both sound boards measure 1.75" x 0.75" x 0.5". The speaker measures 1.75" in diameter, and are about 0.625" tall. The speaker baffle is about 1.625" tall, should it be needed.

Included with each sound system is the circuit board, speaker, optional sound baffle, on/off switch and double-sided foam tape to help secure the components. As mentioned above, you'll need to supply your own 9-volt battery.

To install, you'll likely need to drill holes in your item to allow the sound from the speaker to escape, and then secure the board, speaker, on/off switch and your battery with the included double-sided foam tape. Your own hot glue gun may also assist with installation, especially if you install the speaker baffle.

Price on the Halloween or Christmas systems is $22 each plus $5 flat shipping.

2. Lionel Polar Express "All Aboard!" Conductor Announcement Sound System with appropriate speaker, wire harnesses and foam tape for ease of mounting.

These were originally included in one of the traditional-sized Polar Express add-on passenger cars. It activates by sensing either the bell or whistle signal from a conventional transformer. The two wires get connected to track power, and their orientation will determine whether these boards respond to the whistle or bell control on your transformer.

The original Polar Express starter sets contained a CW-80 transformer with an air whistle in the tender, so these boards would be perfect to operate off the CW-80's bell button. Of course, you could add these to any train you wish, but note that if you already have a sound system on the track that responds to the whistle and/or bell buttons of your transformer, then this board will respond as well. Lastly, they will respond to any conventional AC Lionel transformer with the appropriate controls or Lionel's 6-5906 Sound Activation Buttons just fine, but they do NOT work with LionChief, DC power, or any form of command control.

Once activated, the board's sole purpose is to play the famous "All Aboard!" Conductor Announcement from the movie. There's no volume control, but the volume is adequate for most applications.

You'll need to drill holes in the frame of your passenger or freight car in order for the sound to escape, and find a way to get track power to the board. I'm including some foam tape to help mount everything. The board measures approximately 1-5/8" x 1" x 3/4" and the speaker is 2" in diameter and about 5/8" tall.

Price on the Polar Express System is $37 plus $5 flat shipping.
