So I know this was discussed widely in these forums a few years back, but all the threads on the subject were locked, so I figured I'd start this one. Anyway I was able to get my hands on a new 30-1590-1 4-6-0 in the 'George Washington' paint scheme which is identical minus the lettering to WDW RR's #1 Walter E. Disney which the locomotive was modeled after.

Anyway I bought it with the intentions of changing the letters for the Walter E Disney for my Disney-obsessed 4 year old so I figured I'd take some measurements to properly scale my decades. So as I'm inspecting the tender I saw what looks like a hidden layer of paint at the right angle of light. Take a look where the word 'George' is and it looks like something was erased/paint removed. And sure enough if you look under the picture of George Washington there is the Walt Disney World Railroad logo! Makes it seem as these were actually in production as the real Walter Disney when the licensing didn't come through they salvaged them with the president paint overs.

So to those with painting expertise,  think I should try to remove the top layer of paint or just place decals over it?

So, I never got around to finishing it. I started slowly rubbing away at the paint on the tender and the WDW logo is definitely under there and fully painted. I just stopped because I wasn't have success in completely removing the George Washington face without also starting to remove the WDW paint and some of the fine striping around the circle logo as well. I think I'm just going to end up putting on decals. I don't have a permanent layout, so I don't have alot of time to work on these things, but I'll let you know when I end up getting around to it.

In the meantime I have started working on a Protosound file for both the Walter E Disney and CK Holiday. I was able to add the custom sounds to the TIU much to the enjoyment of my Disney-obsessed kids, next step is getting them into the sound file itself.

I had back story about this but can’t find it anywhere. It may still be on here on another thread. I just cant find it. It explains the planned project that these engines would be involved with at the Park

Not much of a detailed backstory description (though, I see I referred to when one was on display at Disneyland back then), but I found a few threads with mention of this train back then(or some may be general Disney train related) :

(sorry, I didn't remove the link to specific posts, so you'll have to scroll up to see the start of the threads, if you care to)

It's hard to believe it was over 6 years ago when this came about.  Time flies!

Yep. Basically they took measurements of the Walter E. Disney at WDW. Had a display model set up with a couple of prototypes. They started production of them when the licensing deal fell through, so the models were painted in the American Circus, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln schemes. Didn't realize until I got my own that they actually were painted for WDWRR before the deal fell through and had to have the markings covered up.

I lucked out as a hobby shop I found using the MTH search tool had the George Washington and was willing to negotiate, I got it brand new for under $300. I see them pop up from time to time on ebay, but never really all that cheap.

And there's a whole thread below dedicated to altering Protosound files. It requires some minor programming skills and patience, but it's pretty cool when you realize what can be done. I've already broken up the Disneyland RR announcements into individual MP3 files, but I still have some work to do before my coding skills/patience are up to the task of getting them into the sound file..

Does anyone have artwork to print labels for the Walter E. Disney?

I found some artwork for the tender. Its decent, but I haven't found anything for the lettering below the Cab windows.

I tried taking pictures, but it's tough to get a clear shoot when it's running in the park and when I did the Florida sun glare is a problem.

I plan to try taking pictures on a cloudy day once the RR reopens in 2021.

I have something resembling decals that were sent to me, but theyre not the best quality. However I found the exact font and plan to use that to better quality decals.

PM your email address and I'll send them over.
