I've been seeing  a lot of posts about wanting cars in AMTRAK paint.  Has anyone asked Scott to do these cars in AMTRAK???  I think all of them were painted into AMTRAK once they took over the passenger car business.

I haven't asked him, I would definitely get some individual coaches in Amtrak if offered. I think the skirting would have to be removed for them to be prototypical for Amtrak.

I did ask and the answer is no.  There has only been one serious request for an Amtrak set to Scott and I would have been the second.  The skirting would have been removed and now the factory is less willing to offer these variations than they used to be without significant cost increases.  There were more requests for individual cars, but not enough to make the extra road name viable.

All the cars did run on Amtrak and some of the sleepers and coaches made it into the Heritage Fleet.

Ok good to know. Any idea of production schedule on this set?

I can't speak for Scott on this, but we have reviewed the factory drawings and just verifying the names /  numbers that will go on each car.  The next step is graphics, which aren't too complex on this set, so production is likely this year still?  As everyone knows costs have increased in China so it's hard to predict schedule at this point.

Aaahh ok thanks for the update

GGD doesn't show pre-production photos anymore just like the other major manufacturers.  To often people, most who have no plans to buy a set nitpick the product to death before it has been released based on a partially complete product.  It causes people to needlessly cancel their orders only to wish they had not after the sets have arrived and the non-reserved sets have already been sold to customers with back-up orders.

I certainly wish it was different, but it seems that is the environment we live in.  This is especially true on this forum.  From what I have seen and collaborated on, it is going to be another fabulous set.  Wish I had the funds to have ordered a set.

Thanks for your nice reply, Jonathan. Yes, it's very sad when people get like that.....it's as though the internet gives everyone the right to interject and add their penny worth.

Interestingly, Lee Marsh, who produces the most unbelievably high quality brass items here in the U.K. does post progress pictures and it seems to work in his favour. If you go to his website, check out the Victorian Great Western Railways coaches he has produced....works of art!

I've really enjoyed reading your posts on this thread and very much appreciate you taking the time and trouble to respond. The Silver Meteor has always been one of my favourite streamliners and I can't wait to see how it turns out. I just wish the stock would come with couplers fitted!

Best wishes from the UK.

Steve.

I finally got my Mianne bench work and track down, now I’m in the process of putting in Caboose Industries Ground Throws.  While I’m waiting for the Meteor to get finished and arrive I’m going to run trains and make sure the track is functional.  Most of my switches came from Signature Switch and work fine, but I built 7-8 myself and need to make sure they don’t cause any derailments.  They’re a bit more bumpy than the Signature switches, but I’ve got them all on sidings where the speed is low.

Anyway, I can hardly wait.  This will be my first GGD passenger train!

Bob,   I hope you meant you finally got your MAIN bench work and track down, and you didn't have to go all the way to MAINE for your lumber!

Oops, not that far north!!!  Fixed it.  I've done away with my desktop PC and now using my laptop and having a hard time with the keyboard!!!

Mike, I figured AFTER I had gone to the effort of scratch building a close facsimile this would happen.  Hey...maybe if I start on this:

sal pacific 2

we'll see one from one of the makers shortly afterwards.

I still think if GGD produced extra sets in Amtrak they will sell without need for preorders.  Where are all the so hard to sell Amtrak GGD Slumbercoaches, 10-6, & 4-4-2 Sleepers?  Answer is... SOLD OUT!!!

I don't know (maybe Scott M and Bob H do), but there may not have been enough inquiries/orders for justifying Amtrak cars.  I'd have to go back and read all the post to even see if Amtrak had been offered, I know the data was provided.

Besides, there may always be another run if enough folks make it known they're in the market to buy and let Scott know.  I think the Sun-Lounge cars would sell well no matter what name was on the side.

Its hard to get sales on something you do not offer.

Wonder what changed since the Amtrak versions of ATSF high level cars, 4-4-2, 10-6, & Slumbercoaches were made in Amtrak?

Well I only ordered the extra PRR coach. I am almost paid off with it and I am debating on whether or not to get the extra PRR sleeping car. I still owe on the army comm, hospital, and surgical cars.... Plus the Heavyweights.

Unless GGD comes up with some more PRR cars, I will be done unless I get a hold of their 2008 PRR Broadway LTD sets.

check public delivery track.  higher prices but may have what you are looking for.

In the projects you mention we had only 2 or 3 orders in Amtrak. Since then Amtrak has required us to sign a licensing agreement to do any more Amtrak painted cars or engines and pay a royalty for the privledge. In the process we are required to send samples for approval of paint color and decal design. Too much expense and  effort for just a couple of orders.  If anyone wants to paint and decal their own cars, we can offer cars undecorated. These are the reasons why we don't offer Amtrak schemes in these cars.

We are trying to get enough orders for the Amfleet cars. It's getting there, but still short of our expectations.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have checked their site regularly and I am in 3 rail. I have what they offer in three rail now. IF only Beth could convert the 2 rail to three rail.....

I've always found Scott very cooperative on doing paint schemes as long as you have enough to make it worthwhile as he runs a business not a charity.   I've ordered Amfleet cars but may order more.  I am looking at seeing if he will do the Northeast Regional Amtrak scheme.  If you are interested in that paint scheme please let him know.

He is offering so many things I want it's hard to get them all....LOL.  I have SCL cars coming and VGN EL-2Bs.  Looking at the super domes, etc

Hi Folks,

I cut the UPS tags for most all paid orders on Monday. We are picking and packing these orders and 1/2 have shipped on Monday 2.11 and the rest will ship 2.13. I hope they arrive un damaged, but if so, just email me if you need service. Every single set and car is spoken for. It's really been crazy trying to keep up with orders. I guess that's a good thing.

We will be announcing more trains in the near future. Thanks to all of you that support these projects.

OK, I'll take the bait (and leave it to the OP to start a new thread if he wants to).

Here are a few pictures of the three cars from my six car set that I have unboxed. The perspective in the first photo makes it seem that these might be a 21", an 18" and a 15" car but obviously they are not:

The photo above gives a fairly accurate impression of the finish, which is painted to represent stainless steel. In the ones below of the observation car it is either too shiny or too dull compared to the actual model:

Scott,

Have you ever considered in making the Phoebe Snow 8 car set.

VistaDomeScott posted:

Those are spectacular!

Yes, agreed; spectacular is the word. There are a few cosmetic issues but a couple of things to note:

1. No “dead spots” in the internal LED lighting as with older GGD 21” cars, which is an improvement Scott said would be made.

2.  The GGD passenger figures inside are OK but the quality of these cars practically cries out for more and better figures that do not look like they were made for reclining chairs. Not sure I am ready to open up any of them for this purpose but the Sun Lounge car needs attention . . .

As a side note, I wish all passenger cars came without figures, but 3 railers ask for them. When you remove them, the chairs are left damaged from the glue. If Scott takes them from future productions, it could help prices but I bet many will see that as a "removed" feature.  I'm ok w them as long as Scott can keep on making these gifts for us.

Beautiful!!!  Mine should be here any day now.

What did you have to do to put Kadees on them?

I'm getting 3-rail cars but run on code 148 2-rail track, so I need to (1) put Kadees on and (2) remove the center rollers.  That means no lights so (3) I'll have to figure out how to light that gorgeous OBS car's rear end!

When I saw the diner photo I almost went into shock, WHAT'S an antenna doing on top of (my) SAL car?!?!?!?!  But the only photo I can find of a real one kinda shows an antenna on the roof, either that or there's a handrail behind the car and it's an optical illusion.

I didn't (install Kadees). What you are seeing on the rear of the observation car is the scale coupler that comes stock on this particular car. It looks like a Kadee but I am not sure it is. The other couplers are the stock GGD 3 rail style.

Sacrilege! These cars were meant to run with full lighting. But I assume that you can power them off the wheels with an appropriate DC-DC conversion module.

No, that's no illusion; there is an antenna there. Shows up slightly better in the additional photo below:

IMG_6319

I have not researched the prototype sufficiently to know whether the antenna is completely accurate but I have learned to trust how streamlined cars are rendered by the best HO car builders, whose research I have consulted for other named trains. In this case I have found the below images, which although not of the same car as GGD modeled nonetheless show the antenna in place:

Thanks!  I'll be running lights (are they LEDs???) off a battery (no power on my rails) at some point, the rear lights on the OBS anyway, don't care for that operating room appearance the lights give in O scale cars.

Here's a thought: Some Importers have been known to have an ON/OFF switch on the bottom for lighting. A nice option, I think....or you could get a couple Doctor figures to sit in your cars.

The Sun Lounge was only part of the six car set. I pre-ordered mine at least a couple of years ago. While I suspect that they are sold out at GGD you might try contacting them or one of their dealers.

Its a custom painted train using Lionel, Atlas O, and Weaver cars 20" & 21" cars.  Cars are as close as possible off the shelf O scale models of cars actually used by auto-train.  I had to compromise on the locomotives using Atlas O U23B with blomberg trucks.  Painting was done my Christine Brandon .  Theres a thread I posted on the train burried deep in the forum somewhere.
