Glue recommendation

Check Gorilla and Locktite Glues, I would recommend a gel (no runs), paintable and flexible, apply with toothpick.

Have used Tenax (or it's replacement) with a fine brush. A dab on the spot and it dries extremely quick.

MEK thinner makes a good glue for a fair amount of plastic types.  Methyl Ethyl Ketone - a.k.a. "PVC pipe cleaner".  Watery thin - apply to the joint with a small, fine paint brush, then let the joint dry.  If you can clamp or weight the joint together while it's drying, so much the better.

Don't use Super-glue - the fumes tend to make the plastic turn white.  Find a good plastic glue to do this.

Looking for feedback on two things along the subject of glue repair.

Just received my first Lionel O Scale Legacy Diesel delivered today. The shipping carton looked like it had seen its share of handling. Upon opening the inner Lionel box was perfect. However once I got the engine out of the box two things (mind you I am extremely careful unboxing) I found. First is that the bottom step on the left front truck had been snapped off and floating in the plastic wrap.

I've seen and used CA or Super Glue for other plastic repairs and find it a bit to be desired, like C&O Allan mentions above. Not to wake an old thread but any other tips or glue options out there? Maybe from Lionel?

Secondly in picture's two and three, noting the left side cab sunshade visor (sorry if that's not the proper terminology.) Does that look like it had been re-glued or something? The right side picture three, looks to be attached more nice and even and seems to have different angle when looked at straight on from in front of the cab.

I've had great luck with JB Weld epoxy. Those cab steps should definitely be considered with that. They have a Kwik version that sets faster. I love them for my prewar switcher marker lights.

As mentioned by Tom, and others on related glues, I found JB Weld, and JB Kwik to be good. I had a step like that come off a G gauge Alco, and thanks to folks on this forum, it was easy to repair

Note that you will have to be selective how you apply the JB-Weld so it doesn't appear obvious it was glued.  I typically use JB-Kwik for most repairs like this, makes things go faster and is thicker to start.  I use a small flat toothpick to apply it when I'm trying to be careful where it goes.

I'd also contact Lionel, you may be able to get a replacement pilot with the steps, and perhaps even the visor.

To add to Gunrunner John, one other good thing about JB Weld is that it's a dark grey color, so it'll blend in a little on the grey steps if you get a tiny bit showing. Although, as John says, just use a tiny bit so it doesn't show. Regarding the visor, I've had bent visors quite a few times. These are attached to the side of the cab with a couple of metal rods, and you can bend the visor back up into a better position that matches the one on the other side. You can tell yours is bent down from the gap between the inside of the visor and the cab. Use two thumbs to equally bend the front and rear of the visor at the same time (in your case, you'll want to bend the visor up). Just bend it very gently, and very slowly, to reduce the chance of loosening the rods that stick into the plastic on the side of the cab. (Experience talking here. )

Hi TheOReg, Few months ago I purchased online a new FEC SD70 . Upon opening, found 3 pilot steps and one air hose floating around in the box.

I called Lionel customer service and sent them an email with a photo of the broken parts along with a copy of my sales receipt. Two weeks later I received both front(with plow) and rear complete pilots.

I tried E6000 last time and it seemed to give me slightly more work time.

Hey all, I'd like to thank you for the feed back. I'm sitting here now a bit more angry and frustrated. I purchased some JB Kwik Weld and was planning to epoxy the step back in place this morning. Upon closer inspection I can now plainly see this engine had been attempted to be repaired by someone. It's not so visible in the pictures but in plain sight with a magnifying glass I can see shiny evidence of what I guess is CA adhesive on the pilot step where the broken step piece would mount to. Clearly this was probably somebody's attempt to return it to the store unnoticed.  

It's been over a week after sending pictures in email to not only the store I purchased it from but also to Lionel Support.. No response from either of them yet. Just resent the same pictures that are now highlighted to the points to show the glue residue.
