I have a MTH 20-67035 Full Length Vista Dome in Seaboard Air Line silver.  I think it was new in 2003, wife "made" me buy it.  Anyway, never have like the car as SAL NEVER had any dome cars that I know of and certainly not a full length dome.

I was going to sell it but then got thinking...There's a lot of parts on this car that could be used to build a car I want.

Not sure what type of trucks (MTH #DA0100005) those are, but they look good enough to reuse on a heavyweight I think, plus they're $25 each if bought separately, the entire car was only $70 new!!!  Also, the thing is loaded with seats, I could probably outfit 2 other cars with the parts I can harvest (Weaver N&W passenger cars come to mind).

Not sure what else could be reused, maybe the diaphragms, and I could also try selling the shell and underframe/floor for cheap.

Being I run 2-rail using 3-rail trucks this would fit in with what I have.

I bet I don't have 2-3 hours run time on this thing since buying it in 2004 or so.  Being it's not prototypically correct for SAL, I haven't given it the time of day even though I know it rides the rails just fine.  I haven't even removed the center rollers (yet).

Has anybody else done something like this, hack a perfectly good running car to pieces to get parts to use for other projects?

Pete, I could but it would amount to the same thing.  I'd still have to do something to the inside.  I'll look, maybe there is a car body in the style I want!

There is an ebay seller, perrystoyexchange. He has a brick and mortar store. Give him a call next week with your wish list. He has a lot more than what you see on the auction site. Likely has seats too. Without the ebay fees it may be less than you think.

Bob, it's yours to hack up as you see fit to build what you really want - everything in a box is raw materials

Sure.  There's nothing sacred or heretical involved, and it's you call.  BTW, just what is it that you want to build?

Hey Martin,

Yep, sure is mine to do with as I please.  Why would I try selling this for 1/2 or less than I paid for it when the trucks alone are worth more than 1/2?!?!?!  Plus the thing has 100 seats in it that can be used in other cars.

What I want to build...not sure but I'm leaning towards something in ACL heavyweight.  Problem is most of the photos I can find show modernized cars (windows and roofs are apparent mods) and not small windows and clerestory roofed cars that are on the market.

Plus, don't feel like spending a lot of $$$ these days on trains, I have way more than I need or can run at one time so I'm only looking for 1 or 2 things.  I'm actually spending more time and money on target shooting these days.  Of course if the opportunity strikes...I really enjoyed building those wood kit boxcars a while back and could use a couple more even though I don't "need" any more.

Target shooting?  Out here, gun stores are classified as essential businesses - presumably folks are anticipating somethilng a little less hobby-ish.

I don't do plastic, but from the photos that seems to be a handsome model.  You could pretend it got loaned to the Seaboard for a special event - that's what this hobby is, anyway.

I got bit by the bug couple of years ago, last purchases were some old WW2/post WW2 type rifles (Mauser, Mosin, Carcano, Arisaka).  U.S. and British rifles are going for too much $$$ for me to jump on the good ones.  Might get a repro M1 Carbine, they're still reasonable.

The car is nice looking, but not for me. I may add mine to the list of shells for sale!  Came apart easily, surprised it has a plastic floor, but it has a raised portion in the center so maybe they thought it was cheaper than doing it in metal.
