Going to York from NY City -- How?

Rent a car in NY and drive to York. Then leave the car in Baltimore. I'm sure you will get a better connection to WA from Baltimore.

Here's another idea, Take the train to Baltimore and rent a car. it's only a hour drive from Baltimore to york, and then return it in Baltimore. That way you won't have to pay a drop off fee.

Check with the rental car company before you decide to leave a rental at another airport.  I ended up in Philadelphia Airport on the way to Baltimore and took a rental back to Maryland.  They charged the government a lot for that since they had to get the car back to the airport where it was assigned.

Hi Eddie, thanks for the advice. I will look into other airports.  Last year, I flew to WASH DC from Seattle and then had a layover before going to Harrisburg.  The though of driving out of Manhattan spooks me.   

Take NJ Transit to Newark Liberty Airport (it has a direct stop)and grab a rental from there, it should be cheaper than city locations.  Check rates as they can change based on where the company's other cars are getting dropped off. BWI is a Southwest hub.

Hi Jmiller,  That did happen to my on my last trip, since I got the car in Harrisburg and dripped if off in Philadelphia.  That time, my company paid for half of the rental since I had several meetings in the Philly area.  Not this time.  

Hi Jeff,  Newark is my preferred Airport to get to NY from Seattle, I find it very easy to get to Manhattan from there.  That would ease my phobia of driving in Manhattan, which is in second place behind Boston...  

For convenience, I would rent a car. If Newark is your best option for a non-stop to Seattle, The drive from the Newark airport to York is an easy one.

As someone who has lived in NJ, NYC, and Philadelphia, it sounds to me like your best option is as follows:

1. Take the train from Penn Station to Newark Train Station (either Newark Penn or to the EWR station at the airport).  The EWR station is a NJ Transit-only station (i.e., Amtrak doesn't stop there).  If you go to the EWR Station, you can either take the shuttle over to the airport or investigate to see if the rental car companies do pickups/dropoffs there.
2. Rent a car and drive to York.  I-78 -> I-81 -> I-83.  Not a bad drive at all.
3. Obviously stay in a hotel at York.  
4. Drive back to EWR after the show to drop the car.

Another option would be to take an Amtrak train to Phila and drive from there.  There is a Hertz rental office *in* 30th Street Station in Phila and it's a 90-mile drive from there.  I would do this only if, for some reason, you had better flight options home out of Phila.  (I personally use this Philly option, but only because I take the train back and forth to New England.  If I were in NYC, I would do the above.)

Anything outside of that, IMHO, (e.g., using Harrisburg "airport" and driving an extra hour down and back to Baltimore) would become considerably less effective quickly.

Newark strikes me as your best bet.  If the company is paying, you can also get there by hailing a cab in NYC.  However, if it's rush hour, take the train.

P.S. If you're ok with driving in NYC, rent a car near wherever your last meeting is and drive straight to York.  There is no difference in drop-off fees between midtown Manhattan and EWR.  As someone who lived in Manhattan for 5 years, however, I wouldn't do this during rush hour.

As a New Yorker I second Steven's comments above.

But without the last option of driving in NYC. If your timing is wrong and you don't like driving in The City, you can get really burned and be stuck in traffic for hours then have the 3+ hour drive to York on top...

No way are you ever stuck in the city for 3 hours.

This works well.

1. Take the train to Baltimore.

2.  Rent your car at the station.

3.  The station is right on I83.  Go north an hour and you'll be at York.

4.  Enjoy the day at York.  Eat dinner at Tuesdays(?).  You won't find a room in York, so head South on I83 for a half hour to Cockeysville and stay at the Marriott.  If you let your fingers do the typing you can find a place closer. 

5.  Go to York the next day.  Spend the night again.  Drop your car at the Baltimore airport.  If you need to, find the UPS people and ship your purchases home.

there is a charter buss that picks people up starting in Long Island. I am not sure of the details, maybe someone from that area can chime in.

I would consider the train from Penn Station to one of the stops closer to York and rent a car from there.  You would probably be within 20 miles or so from York.  Do the reverse back to NYc.

It would be around 2 hrs. or so by train,I think.

The drive to York from NYC is easily 3 hours.

More than once I've been stuck trying to get out of Manhattan for an hour or more... Crossing Manhattan from Brooklyn to any tunnel/bridge to Jersey on a busy afternoon can be a nightmare.

Another thing to check for as the last car I tried to rent a few weeks ago at enterprise stated if you leave a certain area ( it varies ) it said if I left the 3 states near me the mileage rate would be at higher rate and it was close to double the regular rate. That was stopped me going to york this year. may try again next april   

I've taken the train to get me close to York twice and loved it.  The first time I caught a train from Lancaster (30 minutes from York) to Philly and caught a NE Regional to BWI.  The second time I flew into BWI and took the train from BWI to DC to catch the Capitol Limited.  Each trip was a fun way to enjoy the hobby.

I grew up 45 minutes from NYC by train and never ever considered driving in the city.  The public transit system in NYC is by far the best in the nation and there isn't much you can't get to via train and subway.

just get to the lincoln tunnel before 3 clock and you will have no problem, if you can head out at around 2 that will be better there will be no traffic,rent a car in ny and drive to york

Thanks for all of the suggestions,  It  was easier for me to book direct flights from Seattle to Newark, so I am going to do that and just rent a car at the Newark Airport on Thursday afternoon and drive back on Saturday.  I have a return flight at 5:30 PM, so I should be able to spend the morning at York and get to Newark airport by 4.

I have my hotel booked at York, the Days Inn.  $119 + tax,  not too bad.  

I really appreciate everyone's suggestions. It will give me options for my next trip, especially if I am going to Baltimore, which I do from time to time.
