GP-30 Legacy Smoke Unit

On my legacy GP-30 Lionel I got the 3 blinks of the cab light and no smoke. Ordered a new fan motor for the smoke unit and installed. On re-starting unit still had 3 blinking lights, so I did a reset. Still 3 blinking lights, so did a second reset and alarm seemed to have cleared, but no smoke. Ideas? Is the vent fan motors connect to the smoke alarm as the vent fan appears not to be working?
