I'm with you Eddie -- 96 Day's to go and I'm ready for the York meet, October, 2017.

Between now and then we can argue, debate, dispute (pick your own word) allowing non-members into the meet; what will be new; how allowing non-members into the meet impacts the number of people who renew their TCA membership (I just renewed mine); what will be on the cover of the next MTH catalog, and all sorts of other interesting things. And then we can go to York, meet & greet friends, hunt for that elusive bargain, find something to complain about and then start the process all over again.

How's this? Retirement in 146 98 87 81 75 63 more working days. Hopefully, this will be the last October York that I miss...

I am going to try to make it on Friday. Depends now on a piece of equipment being repaired and running between now and then.   We'll see. Turned 60 on 8/21. I'm Teflon and bullet proof.

Found out today that I'm on call. I can take vacation day, but can't leave the area. See you guys in April!!!

Thanks, Eddie!

I'm chomping at the bit already. Only saw about 2 hours of York last year because of health issues. Now I'm back and rearing to go! Bringing a friend for his 1st York on Thursday, and grandson for his 5th on Friday.

Having some cash to spend would be nice, but I can't wait to see everybody again, along with the first timers face when he sees the vastness of York!

Where I work, the folks who have less than a year until retirement are out sick a lot.  Just sayin'...

The year before I retired, I worked my a.. off. I found out they needed 2 people to replace me. I've now been retired for 21 years. The first 4 years I did volunteer work, but quit that as well. A person with hobbies and interests, reasonably good health, and enough income can have a great time. So far, I have been very lucky.

You guys seem to have missed my point.

I didn't say that the guys nearing retirement WERE sick a lot.  I said that they were OUT sick from work.  To clarify further, they called in sick even though they weren't actually sick.

It's looking like I'm going to miss October's Meet. It will be just a couple weeks after our move, there will be too much to do. Add that I'll go from a 75 minute drive to a five hour plane ride to get to York making it a bit daunting to get there so soon after the move.  April will be more likely.

But I never say never!

Where are you moving to?

And Ben didn't hit you up for the second car? I hope you got the first one by now and love it. Following a trend here, the second car is the PIELS BROTHERS CAR (remember Bert and Harry). You can order off our website, www.NJHiRailers.com.

Always looking forward to York - particularly October. Something about the October show I prefer over April. Just seems to be this extra excitement in the air, getting colder, fall colors, etc. Love it!

I'm the champion of the 1 day marathon trip. I live a 2 hour, super easy drive from the Fairgrounds (through the mountains and beautiful small PA towns). I make it through every building, twice, in one LONG Friday.

This year, to quench my desire to drive back on Saturday (but never do), I booked a hotel, will be there Thursday, Friday and Saturday as of now. To help recover, and most importantly, play with what I buy, I also took the following Monday and Tuesday off!

Oh, believe me, I've got no problem using them....sometimes I burn through the time faster than I accrue it!

Taking nearly 2 weeks off in June/July to go West to visit Family and Ride the Southern Pacific 4449 for 2 days put a good dent in the time I had! IMG_6817

Well, as a retiree working as a contractor for my old company, I don't get any paid vacation anymore.  That's okay, the small pension checks that are deposited in my account the first of every month make up for it.    We have a slow period right now before starting the next phase of a multi-year project, so I was cut back to working 3 days a week starting today.  I don't even have to tell the manager I won't be in the Thursday and Friday of York Week.

Alan,

Thank you.  I plan to be there Thursday and Friday.  That would be good to meet up with you Friday for a while.  Yes, we got the MTH engine squared away.  Unbelievable after all that, but all it needed was a factory reset.  I did have them buffaloed for a while.

It's a shame the ED has allowed cell phones, cameras, videos, and the public. Also, the TCA's "signature" rule is overlooked. I miss the hot debates we used to have.

All we have left to whine about is body odor and tipping the restroom attendants, as well as crazy ideas for "growing the hobby". Did I miss anything?

I don't remember a arrow debate. Just a few clueless people saying "What arrows?".

The arrows are on the floors showing the direction you're supposed to walk down the isles. There was a nice lady on the intercom about every 15 minutes or so reminding everyone to follow the arrows

I always get a kick out of the arrows. I messed up on my 1st trip and didn't have a clue. I finally paid attention to the announcements and DUH

I was lucky and didn't ever cause a traffic jam.

Now I really enjoy the expressions on some peoples faces when someone is going the wrong way.

So funny , especially if it's a wheel chair or some kind of big cart of some kind. Or a guy wit crutches sticking out three feet each way. Oh lord I see murder in their eyes.lol

I stand there and grin as the entire isle backlogs.

OK, so I have a weird cense of humor.

That money-making idea sounds like a good one, but I think a corollary to Joe Hohmann's and your very funny observations is as follows:

If you took it into your head to buy a box of cheap umbrellas to sell in the parking lot in the event of rain, it wouldn't rain the entire time you were out there selling.

If you gave up and went inside to look at trains, it would immediately start raining.  Buckets.

If you said, "Eh, who cares?" and went shopping for trains, you would find the exact item for which you've been searching for 27 years.  However, you wouldn't be able to buy it because:

  1. The seller's price would be exactly the amount of cash in your pocket PLUS

  2. Whatever the cost of the box of cheap umbrellas was.

In other words, Murphy was an optimist.

Just to expand a little .

They are more necessary in the member halls(Red/White/Blue/Silver), you will see them there most likely everywhere (unless one got peeled up off the floor).

You won't see them in Purple, it is spread out enough in there now (unless there was a massive increase in tables this meet! ) that they aren't needed.

You will see them on Orange, but primarily only in the "front half" of the room where tables are set up in the back-to-back format from aisle to aisle.  The "back half", small side room(s), and first aisle or 2 in from the side walls in the "front half" don't have them where it is set up in booth format, as the aisles are much wider there and arrows are not needed as much.  I think there occasionally has been a situation in the front of Orange where 2 adjacent aisles may have had the same direction arrow.  If you bump into that, it's easiest to just back track one aisle to turn around and then skip over the most recent aisle you just looked at to pick up the new one.

All common sense, but if it was common, there would be no announcements.

If you see an arrow, follow it.

I miss the dealer from the Brown Hall who would put his own arrows on the floor, and they all led into his display, but wouldn't lead you out.  He's now in Purple, without the arrows.  I asked him about the arrows, and he said that the powers that be are not amused by them.

When I first returned to York after a 20 year hiatus I was so excited to be back I immediately walked against the arrows. I had forgotten about them, but after seeing the second one I quickly corrected my course. I have noticed that many times the arrows are not needed, but when the halls are packed they are definitely needed. I just went to the New York comic con in the javits center and while that place is huge, there were so many people that I was wishing they had the same arrow system as York.

I am so excited to go back; thanks for posting this thread Eddie G, it helps build my anticipation. Have a safe trip, and I hope to meet you one of these Yorks.

Safe driving everyone!

Tom

Speaking of arrows, I wish the people who complain about them would try a little experiment -- walk through the Blue, Silver and Red halls against the arrows, and I mean the whole hall, not just one aisle, and on Thursday or Friday (it would be pretty easy on a Saturday), and then tell me how unneccesary the arrows are.  The aisles in the White and arrowed area of the Orange halls seem to be a little wider and could probably accomodate the two-way traffic, but I still follow them.

gunrunnerjohn posted:

...There reallyisn't much observance of the arrows in the Orange Hall nowadays, at least not that I've observed.

Good! I say.

In my opinion and observation, there is something to be said for allowing oneself some spontaneous moments and explorations down aisles that are arrowed against where you happen to be moving along one of the long transverse aisles that run the length of the Orange Hall, across the front, middle, and rear. Following rules has its place, yes, but in an adventure like the York TCA Meet, can't we follow impulses and spontaneity at least some of the time, I wonder. We are there to play, which does not always mean behaving....just my little playful 2-cents worth here on the OGR Forum............. FrankM.

Better yet, do the experiment with a scooter!

Several times while sitting at my table in the Red Hall with the member across from me also sitting in front of his, it's a close squeeze when a larger scooter comes by to see if it makes it without hitting one of the chairs.  (and the chairs are kept very close, it's not like we had them angled or sitting out in the aisle away from the table)

Not suggesting people shouldn't use scooters, of course.  Just that that is likely part of the background on why arrows are helpful.

Many thanks to everyone who commented on the arrows!!    I can see both sides of the coin on the concerning their necessity.  Like anywhere, I try to follow the rules that have been set up, whether I agree or not.  As to the spontaneity of noticing an item that really pricks my interest in another lane; I can just imagine that by the time I get there, it will be sold!
