Fellas, tried laying some On3 track last night using code 83 rail and turnout assemblies, wow I don't know. Eyes are 67 and not the same as they used to be. Had a turnout assembly, just PCS ties, and had difficulty getting them spike down, no fun at all. Considering San Juan code 100 flex and their turnouts. What do ya think? How many are in the same boat?

Experience is key to being able to hand lay track. I've been doing it for 35 years, since I was 11 years old. San Juan Car co. Probably make the best quality On3 track.
I've never had much interest in hand-laying my own track. I've been using Micro Engineering Code 83 flex track and switches and have been completely satisfied...
I admire those can hand lay their track, but for me it is like playing golf. Could not do that either. I use Micro Engineering track, and have been well pleased with my results. It is hard to screw up and have good results.

I use to hand lay my HO track. And based on experience I would hand lay the track and buy the switches, to save time...

Combined with a fair measure of patience. Probably should invest in at least 3 of the 3-point gauges.
You might look into tooling from FastTracks...
By far the best turnouts operationally I have ever used, and their tooling makes them easy to build.
