Something I became very interested in recently are older Norfolk and Western locomotives, and unshrouded N&W locomotives in particular. The J-class seems to be a staple model of the hobby, and it doesn't seem hard to find a few different iterations of both the Y and A classes. I've found a few 0-8-0 switchers from MTH here and there. But beyond that I really haven't found any models of previous N&W prototypes. I'd love to get my hands on a K3 (never shrouded), wouldn't mind an (un)shrouded K2/K2a either. An N&W 4-6-2 would also be nice to have.

But I never seem to find these. I think 3rd Rail produced a handful of K's a few years ago. Apparently Lionel had a cancelled production run too. But it seems that no one else has made them. Is this true? Are there any 4-8-2 models out there close enough to a K class that, if they were repainted and lettered, could pass for a K?

3rd Rail did run a K-class 4-8-2.  They also did an N&W 4-8-0 (M class maybe?).  Both are hard to find now.  With lots of 3rd Rail stuff, you snooze you lose.

I can confirm that 3rd rail did produce the M class. Extremely hard to find. These are a highly coveted item (it seems that there is a sizable demand), hopefully they will consider doing another run of these in the near future!

I've seen those, unfortunately they have a pretty high asking price, but then again they're brass so that's no surprise. I was hoping someone else had made a die-cast version that I could keep an eye out for, but it looks like brass is the only option then. Thanks for checking!

Funnily enough, I thought the prices were a great deal until I looked again just now and realized they were not TMCC equipped out of the box. Even installing an Electric RR kit on top of the price would make it comparable to a new Legacy engine price-wise; if I was modeling the N&W, there's a chance I might bite for those prices.

That being said, I think Trainz (who is selling 1 of the 2 mountains) always over prices the items they are selling

That's about what I'm thinking - I'd like to add some variety to my N&W roster beyond just articulateds.

Western Depot still list a N&W K-2 for sale.  I think they bought the remaining units from 3rdRail many years ago.

Oh what a beautiful, brand-new engine...

I'll probably bite on one of these. Thanks for the help! There are so many great dealers online I forget to check them all.

Please note that Sunset did the K-2a which is streamlined.  The other 4-8-2 they did is the K-3 "Water Buffalo".  It was a hard rider so N&W sold them off to other railroads. You will see them listed under other road names but easily modified back to N&W.  The only N&W K-2 with out the streamlining was a generic 4-8-2 that was customized to match the N&W.

There have been some. The following link gives some information about many 0 Scale N&W models imported in 2 and 3 rail.

The non streamlined J1 engines lasted only a short time in that manner. They were Streamlined in January of 1945 and given the J classification.

Thank you for sharing that thread, lots of great info there!

Does anyone on the forum have any particularly strong feelings about the BrassTrains.com, one way or the other? They have a K2a listed that I'll add to my list of things to keep an eye on.

Also do all 3rd Rail/Sunset models come with TMCC out of the box? Trainz has a K2a listed and says it has TMCC, but Western Depot and Brass Trains don't mention it. If they don't include it, are they conventional only? "Shelf Queens"?

Not all 3rd Rail/Sunset locomotives were made with TMCC or DCC for 2 railers.  The K2a did come with TMCC.

Here is link to the OGR article that reviewed this locomotive:  OGR 3rd Rail K2a Review

3rd rail locomotives started getting command in the late 2000's as I recall.  All the projects I have been involved with since 2009 have had command outside of the GG1 where the 2 rail version did not have command.  It's been so long I need to look at the box on my 2 rail one!

Tough break for me, guess I'll be coughing up some extra cash for the conversion! But first things first, I need to buy a K-3
