Can anyone help me to identify this tank car? I purchased it at an auction last year. It has no markings on the frame (or anywhere for that matter) that indicate a manufacturer. I tried searching Dowx-38321 (and several variations) to no avail. It appears to be slightly larger than the typical tank cars, so I am thinking it is "scale" (if I am using the term correctly).

I would appreciate any help in tracking down the item number, manufacturer, etc. for inventory purposes. Maybe somebody has one like it and has some info.

Thanks in advance of any help!

I wonder if that is a Red Caboose model of the 10,000 gallon car?

I don't think so.  That was a model of a non-pressurized tank car with a conventional expansion dome.  This model looks like it is trying to represent a pressurized tank car with the valves and safety devices under the small protective "dome".

Can you help us help you by telling us if this is a plastic, diecast or brass car and show us photos of the underframe?

My guess is that given the car type and DOW markings it is intended to represent a chlorine tank car.

I came close to finding some information about the car. A result seemed to indicate a Proto 2000 - 8,000 gallon type 21 tank car. I am not familiar with this but the result gave a model number of 21767. I was not able to get anywhere with it (kept getting HO scale).

The underside is shown in the picture.

Looks like a Weaver with the trucks changed out.

The Weaver plastic tank cars have stub sills.  This car has a full length underframe.

There is some black paint that has chipped away from the underframe and it looks like brass.  Is the tank made from thin sheet brass?  My best guess at this point is that you have a 1950s, 60s or 70s vintage brass car that has had post war Lionel trucks added to convert it to 3 rail.

Kusan??

It is definitely not the Kusan/Kris Model Trains single dome tank car.  That was a model of a non-pressurized tank car.

I found a KMT 301 8,000 gallon single dome brass tank car!

I put the car in my train inventory as that - who can argue?

Your model is of a pressurized tank car.  While there were 8,000 gallon pressurized tank cars, larger sizes were more common for 50 ton cars.

You likely have a KTM/Max Gray/US Hobbies tank car.  They were labeled as 10,00 gallon cars.  A look at the coupler pocket in the frame would be helpful in confirming your cars' identity.  The 2 rail guys could likely confirm that.

Take a look at this KTM/US Hobbies tank car at Brasstrains.com

Caustic Soda is not proper for this style car.  Chlorine gas would be. Not that many people would have known that when these cars were made.

The closest modern plastic equivalent to your car would be the Atlas 11,000 gallon tank car.  You can read more about it in the O Scale Freight Car Guide to Tank Cars.
