Hello,

I just got a Lionel 8304 4-4-2 engine and tender from the early 70's. The engine is in good shape and only required lubrication to get it to work well. The smoke unit and headlight work as well.

My problem is with the tender. It is supposed to have the "mighty sound of steam" but I am not getting anything but a loud hum. It connects to the engine with a wire. I also believe that this tender does NOT have a whistle by design.

Any thoughts on how to trouble shoot this issue?

Thanks!

Classic issue with those.  Top suspect is capacitors on the SOS board, followed closely by wiring issues.  They were also attached using foam with adhesive on it, and those have normally turned to dust and the board is rattling around loose inside the tender. I'd start by replacing the capacitors, electrolytic capacitors at 40 years old frequently die of old age.

You're right, the early SOS boards just did the hissing sound that was supposed to be steam.

It used to list the member profile when you clicked the name.

On the tight hand side of the profile displayed.  This is from Chuck's profile, so I know it's there.  When I open that Extended Profile link, his email address is there as well.
