My command base responds ( as does the locomotives ) when I press all buttons on my hand held remote. The command base ( and subsequently the locomotive ) does not respond when I turn the red dial clockwise but responds when the dial is turned counter clock wise. Anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a fix for this or is this a sign that hand held is about to die? I appreciate your help! Many thanks!

Try changing the 4 batteries with fresh ones. First thing to stop working properly is the red dial on a cab-1.
If it is working one way and not the other, it is probably not the batteries. The way the knob works, it has a series of slots, with an emitter/collector pair that shine through the slots. If there is dirt, or the unit is misaligned, that could be the problem. I only know this because I've looked inside one before.
