Grandt Line engine house hinges.

For these hinges, the door wings were made from pieces cut from those big copper-colored staples that come on large cardboard crates (Plasma screen boxes and such). I shaped one end a bit with a Dremel, and on the other end made loops for the pins with needle-nosed pliers.

The frame wings are just u-shaped bits of carved styrene. The pins are straight pins. I heated them and pushed them through the styrene, capturing the door wings.

Vulcan, do those hinges operate? Can you find the part number?

Jim, the hinges do operate, however you don't get all you need. The hinge has a small hole in the "knuckle" part. I used a piece of .030 gauge wire bent in an L shape. If you look closely you can see the wire.

The part number is 3553.

It isn't that I mind paying the couple bucks to buy some, I am rather inpatient....

Yeah, me too. I do have to say, though, that the more of the detail work I can manage to do from scratch the prouder I feel at the end of the project. The only commercial item in my recent shed was the oil barrel, and that came from a play set from the dollar store. The whole project cost maybe $15, mostly in wood stock. The final result isn't as refined as some, but it fits the "classic Lionel" look of my layout and every piece is unique.
