@harleyhouse, I’m glad you brought this up, Cornerfield Model Railroad is actually on my bucket list, how far would you think this store is from Pittsburgh?, my thoughts are around 105 miles? So, maybe Mark and Rick might want to make the trip, 2 hours there, 2 hours back, it’s maybe….. I’ve seen many pictures of the Cornerfield layout, but in person is always more interesting. We will see.
if you haven’t seen the layout at The Carnegie Science Center, it’s fantastic, 30 feet by 80 feet, well landscaped, 24 inches off the floor, lots of displays on the walls, everyone working for the model railroad was very friendly and helpful. Here are a few pictures I took. The lights go from daylight to dark and  the layout displays 4 seasons. Happy Railroading Everyone 983F824C-186A-41D0-9169-9B9F37D579A4F5B1A99D-2641-405F-AC6F-FBC6DF2EB11A10565D29-8ABF-46CB-83E2-9856152612E142EA19FC-3D08-4C0A-9F34-39547BD3623B5F6D8319-F6B1-4A88-9263-B9BCAC03B5B0EEF9A2A7-889F-4C56-8127-2A459BC8A83D2C5E6FC8-4C44-4E71-AC0C-C365ABAC1826DB14EB58-14BE-4909-9168-594FC3EAB5606855A264-330D-472C-A9B3-03670BF25029DDE8219D-712D-41CE-AD69-78932E63078DFD0EEFDE-0176-45FC-9D35-6AF14FA5E5295AC39FEF-9DE7-4C16-9263-AE69DF5AC76106EEE711-85EF-4950-9586-E4CBD28CD854F7BEB126-6BCB-4480-BCD0-D09D7D41039BAF3B7D80-EBC1-4EE0-B13E-B0B832B9AD8405471546-DED4-4C22-94E5-F7E6330BA1660EAD7EAB-1E9F-40CB-963E-376D1FC20F3F92504007-5B98-4022-9B29-18B5771AACBFE91D0C56-53FE-4787-991F-EA514DE8F684DB64F487-8F93-4D1C-88F7-3F988B47D2678A6BD38F-6942-4129-9173-EC002C677406

Larry, thanks for posting the pics from the Carnegie Science Center.  The layout is truly fantastic.  I especially liked seeing the model of Forbes Field.  Never went there, but as a Cubs fan I watched a lot of games from there on TV.  I still remember that they would broadcast in black and white, as the lights were insufficient for the color cameras back in the late 1960s.

My recollection of visiting the Carnegie Science Center is that aside from the layout, the rest of the museum is aimed at ages 14 and younger.  Did you find this to be the case?  (That's not necessarily a bad thing, as long as visitors are prepared for it.)

Probably half to two thirds of the exhibits are geared towards kids, but the submarine and a number of the shows are really all-ages, as are some of the temporary exhibits.  A year or two ago one of the temporary exhibits was "Mummies of the World" which featured real mummies (definitely geared to a more mature audience).  As with anything, a little research before going helps in deciding if it is worth the trip.  Personally, I find the submarine and the layout worth the admission every few years or so.

Hi Andy, this has become a really educational thread, I’m so glad I’ve inquired from my forum friends. You can look at Carnegie Science Center in several ways, yes, it caters to our children, “Our Future Leaders”, (they will be paying our Social Security monies)  and to those interested in the Science of Space travel, the Planetarium movie about our planet and the stars 6BBEB02B-5565-421C-858F-6AA12DA4AAC5D88A7561-0D74-476C-8AC1-C79EE48BD750BFFB6DAF-EA37-4245-95C0-B9D3683777A32E0917F6-0AC0-4AD8-BCA7-C3D1824731B84FB3E467-2B16-4038-A348-475A05E527EE7C14520E-E87A-434E-B6F2-309CE7AB728957B49534-857B-42E0-888C-84BEEAAF64838EC38CC1-ACEF-4481-BC67-B8CF9D3D7287AC0063D2-3660-4C63-BA80-70FD51F95F9CAF5230A4-B0F2-407A-ADE4-5E8C841E0ACD82C6F91C-A7C8-4755-9270-812809201D80556664EF-E065-445E-9087-A0EC3CC6D1D9was a great experience, the movie very interesting, then walking through the Submarine was a learning experience, Wow, one bath a month, 4 only commodes, low ceilings, narrow doors, small accommodations, tiny kitchen, it is amazing that our Military men and women had to live in these conditions. One fellow was 6 foot 7 inches tall going through the doors, I’m 6 foot 2 inches tall, 78 years young and I made it easily through the steps and doors, very interesting. I enjoyed the health meters, heart, intestine’s, etc., and if you visited the LEGO center, so cool. What a learning experience. But fellows, the best part was not the beautiful model railroad that I mentioned earlier in this thread, the Icing on the cake so to speak was the IMAX Theater featuring the movie, “Train Time”, produced by the Southern Pacific productions. The movie began with boys playing with their 1940’s type standard gauge trains, having lots of fun, running their trains, derailing their trains and (the observation car at the end of the toy train part was a MTH made Lionel car) growing up to become Engineers operating our truly feature rich computer controlled real Railroads. Wow, this was the very best Train  movie I’ve seen and the IMAX sound system was awesome. We paid $15 for a 6 or 7 hour visit m truly a great price for wonderful entertainment.

Larry, the submarine photographs are great!  The sub was closed the day I was at the Carnegie Science Center 5 years ago or so.  There was an LCCA event going on that day, and I met Marty E. for the second time that day.

I should report what I told you that our younger daughter and son-in-law treated my wife and me to an IMAX film for my 65th birthday.  The film was about the Canadian Pacific building across the Rocky Mountains, and following the route with their steam excursion train.  Superb!!
