Hi All,

In my first attempt at a layout, I’ve decided to use Lionel Fastrack. However, with my track plan, the ready made grade crossings don’t really fit. So, I’m wondering if anyone here has created their own crossings (just the road crossing...I’m using Z-Stuff signals) and can offer me some gudance or suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Tom

Woodland Scenics makes both wood ( part# C1145) and steel plate (part# C1146) grade crossing materials.  I still had to cut it to fit between the rails and allow the flanges to clear. I used white glue to hold it to the ties.  They actually have how-to videos as well.

That’s awesome! I’ll check into those. I knew I’d come to the right place for help 👍

Any ideas for roadway leading up the Fastrack “ballast”? Will need to figure out something for the slight incline...

Recently had this same issue with my FastTrack floor layout as well.  Did some 'kitbashing' of my own using some foam core board and plaster and came out with some great results!  Basically used a hack saw to cut out the plastic roadbed to match the height and width of the foam core and built up a frame to hold the plaster for the road which I molded out of plaster to match the height of the rail.  Stained some basswood to fill in the spaces between the rails and "abracadabra kalamazoo"

Bfish,

What type or grade of ballast did you use on that fastrack?  Where did you purchase it from?

Thank you,

Blake Morris

Blake:  I mix my own ballast using a combination of Woodland Scenics blends. Three colors and sizes: Gray Blend Coarse, Gray Blend Medium, and Buff Fine mixed evenly in equal parts (thirds).  Once glued in place  I misted it over with a few washes of black and brown india ink/alcohol washes using a spray bottle.  Tried to get a the darker washes in between the rails to simulate the grit and grime that I've seen build up on mainlines.
