Good Day Gentlemen,

This evening I was thinking back on the AtlasO post I created to campaign for the GP40-2 titled How about EMD GP40-2’s for future production?” I created that post on May 23, 2008. There were 30,659 people read/view the posts with 229 replies.  Is there still an interest in the GP40-2 being produced?  Who will be the first to produce this diesel locomotive in O Scale?

Regards,

Swafford

The model features quite an impressive list of variations including CN wide cab and Chessie rock pilot among others.

A video interview discussing the new model's introduction:

Perhaps O scale will see its own GP40-2 sooner or later.

Frank guess what road I want this engine made in?

Hello, Frank.

Yes, I believe there is strong interest in an O scale GP40-2. It was such a common locomotive and was operated by many roads in all areas of the country so most fans would have encountered them trackside at one time or another. I still remember when we received our new GP40-2s on Conrail. The new units were very welcome at the time.

It's too bad Athearn doesn't offer O scale motive power and, unfortunately, it'll never happen. I'm not sure the O scale/gauge market as presently constituted can support the manufacturers we have now. Perhaps once Atlas works past its issues, the GP40-2 would be a good starting point for re-establishing a solid presence in this scale. The company already offers the GP40-2 in HO and N scales so its choice would seem logical.

Regards,

Bob

The SD40-2 in the new Lionel catalog are nice, but...

Maybe one could be bashed into a GP40-2. New trucks (from the GP35?) and shortening, and...

Then again, there is only one guy around here who would try something crazy like that.

Yeah that IS crazy.. esp when an article in a O scale 48/ft issue #173 & #174 mag did step by step construction of one from a Weaver GP38!

I agree. Count me in for a Chessie or Union Pacific GP-40.

Love the Lionel GP-30 and GP35. I run them as MU.

But don't hold yer breath. Remember milk cars?  Before they'll consider your idea, its in Lionels DNA to run things over and over ad nauseum till they're blown out.

MTH did a run of GP60's a few year back in different roads.

Its a slightly bigger engine and one to consider if your looking for an alternative to the tsunami of GP-35's that recently hit the market.

Joe
