This nose looks different than the GP40s I see on CSX that run from Garrett,IN to Lapaz,IN. Could this be a GP40-3?

Great post..

Let's not forget CSX. Ha Ha! I love the extra detail Atlas has in their diesels, but being able to go 2 or 3 rail in the MTH Premier Line of diesels makes the compromise worthwhile. Would love to see these done by MTH.

Right now, my money would be on Lionel.

With the recent announcement of all new tooling for the SD40 and SD38, it's clear they feel investing in new tooling in this market is worth it.

The Lionel reps I spoke with when the SD40 was announced stressed they were making modular tooling so they could more easily make "other" locomotives, so let's hope they're paying attention to this thread.

I'll take 2 of these...

And two of these...

E-mail Lionel (and Atlas for that matter) and let you voice be heard!

Rich:

Is Lionel making their new tooling to allow 2railers  to use their engines?

These look good! Thanks for the photos&input.

Hi Al

Not that I know of. The new Lionel diesels have what they call "kinematic" pilots that look like fixed pilots, and only swing with the trucks on tight curves. A nice balance between scale appearance and 3 rail functionality. They also have mounting pads for Kadee scale couplers for "3RS" people like me who want them. I don't think they have any plans for 2 rail.

MTH's scale wheeled locomotives and Atlas O models are your best bet for 2-rail.

The photos I posted are of Atlas HO models.

You also asked:

"This nose looks different than the GP40s I see on CSX that run from Garrett,IN to Lapaz,IN. Could this be a GP40-3?"

That loco is an ex-Canadian National GP40-2LW with a Canadian style wide cab (also called a comfort cab) There a a few other US roads that have these ex-CN units, but CSX is not one of them.

EMD,

I have 2 Atlas GP15T's on track, both used but great runners. I just did my 1st switching for a couple days on a few yard tracks. I have the MTH DCS system sitting by my leg, unused. MTH is coming out with the GP40s in June 2016. now the questions set in.

Do I put those up for sale & buy the GP40s in CSX & run them with the DCS I already have,or put sound decoders in the GP15s,which I have no idea how much that'll cost, then buy a $500 NCE DCC system.for power & someday wait on a possible Atlas gP38-2 or -40-2?

Ah,questions,questions,coupled with ulcers& more ulcers.

There's times I feel like selling it all, trains are supposed to be fun,not headaches, afterall.

Thanks,

Al Hummel

I opted for the MTH GP40s coming out this year. They're supposed to arrive mid summer, but we all know how that goes so at least they may arrive this year.

I know what you're saying. O scale is fantastic but there's a LOT missing in freight, passenger & loco's.  Another thing that's not at all right is the absence of modern safety shelf couplers on modern freight cars & there's no way to say that it's ok. It's like putting Link & Pin couplers on modern freight.

Fully operating ground throws as well as derailers should be available in O Scale due to the increased size. But are they available-no. These 2 items span many generations of railroads,so I have to conclude that modelers in O scale are satisfied not having them,as Kadee has expressed to me. They're aware O scale needs safety shelf couplers, but the demand's too small to tool for them. Who's fault is this-ours. Many modelers in O scale HAVE voiced their opinions like myself,&I say congratulations & thank you.

Now. The incentive for choosing to move to O scale from another scale or for the 1st time with these lacks of products for the "modern era" modelers takes a serious setback. My finances I've posted many times here, determines whether I can move to O scale. Sales are going very well, but as much as I want to stay here,I have to ask myself if I'll be happy.

How about us modern era modelers form a splinter group so we won't agitate other O scalers & push for these new products? Does anyone agree? I'm talking say from 1975 to today? I don't know exactly how this is done & maybe this era of modelers is too small to make it worth it. I don't know, you modelers tell me if interested & thank you.

These are just my opinions.

MTH did their rendition of the GP40 & on the cab they put,"GP40-2".These are nice with 1 door opening & closing on each side of the cab. I have DCS & am looking at Atlas GP15s,but how can you get the Atlas &MTH diesels to work together? Replacing the circuit board on the Atlas diesel to acce[t the DCS is almost as costly as a new diesel-not an option.

I'd like to have Atlas run some 1980-'81 Family Lines hoppers in L&N&SCL but that'll probably be 20 years-look how long it's taken them to make the SCL yellow car. They did an early Family Lines hopper before this yellow car. Looks like things are hit at random.(?)

Just my 2cents

MTH did a GP40,which on the unit itself,it says,"GP40-2." That was about 2015 when it was announced & arrived just about on time-June 2016. I'm still waiting on the Atlas 4750's,due the end of last year&still not here. This is ridiculous. Lionel has BEAUTIFUL engines & rolling stock but no 2 rail or 2 rail conversion capability on the diesels & most rolling stock, like MTH does provide. I give MTH the "thumbs up" here. When the 2rail models are sold out,3rail models can be converted over to 2 rail. That's got to be good for the manufacturer as well as the modeler. JMO.
