I've used pool sand on a luan base. I use water base urethane as an adhesive. When dry, I use red oxide powered dye dry brushed. I then spray a light coat of urethane to seal the dye, or a matte clear coat works. After completely dry, I use a small brass bristle brush to scuff up the finish if it is too shiny. Dave Minarik has used fine steel shot, and his came out great. Maybe he can add some input. I couldn't find his post with photos.
