How to remove tach hat?

Typically, by unsoldering the yellow and white motor power wires, and sliding the tach reader harness over the top of the motor.

I followed Barry's advice, but no dice.  The white tach reader thing seems to be glued or epoxied on.  No sign of being screwed on in any way. I cant figure out how to release

Any other ideas?

What do you mean by "tach hat"? Are you referring to the flywheel? If so there should be a set screw under the tach tape.

Gear puller would be about the only way.  I've left all mine on after converting to BPRC, figured a flywheel can't hurt.

There's no setscrew on most of the flywheels, you have to simply pull the flywheel.  If you don't have the correct tool, this can be hazardous to the health of the motor.

Why are you trying to remove  the flywheel?  You can remove the tach reader, and if the holder bothers you, simply hack it off.

The black holder for the tach reader is a continuous piece on production models.  The flywheel must be pulled off or the holder has to be cut.

Like I said, just hack the holder off.  I've taken a couple of them off, you don't have to remove the flywheel. 

I don't remove the flywheels unless there's a really good reason.  I've had to do a couple for Lionel Odyssey to put the replacement flywheel and magnet on, but I can't see that being the case here.

What is the reason to pull the flywheel?  To get the tach reader holding bracket, just slit it in the back with a blade and it will fold out from under the flywheel.

Ditto, What Marty Says.  An exacto blade makes a an easy slit and the tach reader bracket can be reused.  G
