I like to find older Lionel in need of repair or restoration.  I found a 6819 helicopter car with no load, and another with the wrong load, plus 2 new Lionel helicopters from a place in SC, new in the blister pack for 20 bucks and free shipping.  So, now have the helicopters for the cars, but how would you secure them?  From pics it looks like Lionel just put a string around them.  I have the same question on a pair of TOFC flat cars I found with 2 of four vans missing, where I found the vans and the roofs and wheels for the two missing same, the van just sits on the car with nothing holding it in place.  Did those van just ride along and you took your chances on the curves?

I got the 6819 helicopter car as a NOS purchase at an auction (yeah, I spent too much) a few months back.  I never liked the band to hold it in place, so I just bought some jewelry chain and will upgrade it after it arrives.  I have a bunch of other cars with loads (military vehicles, rockets, etc.) that I plan on using it for as well.  Thanks for the OP @CALNNC and pointing me in the right direction @Ron045.

I used a chain as suggest by @Ron045, along with some modelling ship rope, to secure the helicopter and propellers.  The before/after pictures are below.  I saw several model train pictures where the chains were pulled taught on the struts, but I could not do that.  While it's not as good as some have done, I think it's better than a rubber band!

One interesting note, I did numerous google searches for helicopters being transported via rails, and could not find one picture.  There were a few (very few) of them being transported by trucks.  Most of those showed them with the props removed.
