I need a screw for my new Lionel H10 tender. I'm not sitting on hold for an hour hoping Lionel will answer in order to get a replacement. Nor do I want to pay $12 flat rate shipping or whatever from them or any other parts dealer for a .30 screw.

I'm wondering if someone has an extra( or two) they can sell me so I have an extra for a more realistic/ reasonable price.  Email in profile.

            2.5 mm x 6.0 mm x .45 thd

Believe it no, True Value hardware has such things. Take the screw with you to gauge it.

I had to clean some bad threads with a 3mm tap and  attach part of the superheater assembly on my Lionel NKP 765 (the parts were floating around in the box when delivered as well as the infamous pilot truck wheels). I found that allen head bolts worked best in tight spots .

Rick, whenever I order parts. I usually buy extra screws and things I really don't need just for the fact they are cheap enough and I'm already paying for shipping. Plus I may need them someday. I have 2 that may work. Just double check the thread, pitch and length on Lionel's site. They are a little longer than what you are showing. 8mm versus 6.  Often times there's a few extra threads in the body post. I can send them out in the mail. No charge. Just e mail me your address if you can use them.

Like Earl says these can be had at just about any hardware store these days. MTH uses a mix of english and metric fasteners but pretty sure modern Lionel is all metric.

It used to be precision  measuring tools cost three figures. Nowadays you can find digital calipers capable of measuring english and metric for about 10 bucks on the auction sites. Worth having in the tool box for times like this.

Go around your layout with a good magnet.  I usually find a collection of them!   One of them might work.  Unfortunately it's true.

Save those old blown auto speakers they have great magnets. You can knock the magnet off the frame with a hammer and chisel.   A roofer once left a zillion roofing nails in my yard and whenever I cut the grass the lawnmower got another flat. I glued ten of those old auto speaker magnets to a 2x4 and put lawnmower wheels on each end, drilled a hole in the center of the 2x4 and glued an old mop stick in the hole. Pulled that rig all over the area where the old roofing had been. No more flats.   j

I get my screws from Micro fasteners at a good price. I have a stash of different ones for my work on MTH engines and others.

Last week I was playing with some old equipment and a VCR burned up. I had already torn apart a cordless phone set and got plenty of usable hardware from that so I tore the old VCR apart. I got a nice stash of metric screws, gears, and electric stuff.

My point is if you are throwing away anything, see what screws are in there. I think they were using metric screws for decades now.

When I need a few screws, I'll go to a computer repair shop and talk to them about it. They'll bring out a coffee can full of them and I'll pour a little out at a time on the counter and sort though them. The best part is they have so many of them. They don't even charge me.

No luck at the local hardware store. Yes, they have metric, even the correct diameter and length but the thread pitch is incorrect. The local Ace Hardware only offers these screws in .50 pitch. the Lionel screws are .45.

I thought the whole point of the metric system was so things were more standardized.

I appreciate the offer Dave, but looking at the posts those screws may dead head before being flush. This screw is just above the truck so it must be flush so as not to impede the rotation.

For issues that small that come with a new product, I have had Lionel send me free of charge and free of shipping. It saves them a warranty cost. Of course, I don't know if they are still doing that.

3 years ago I would have emailed Lionel and the screw would have already been in the mail. They no longer answer emails and I've already spent an hour on hold....wondering there theres even anyone in the service dept to take ever my call.

A .30 cent screw is not worth an hour of my time on hold.

I pray I never have to obtain any warranty service. The warranty may expire before someone picks up the phone.

I don't know. Maybe the Lionels customer service folks are off to rest up for the post holiday overload of defective items.
