I am a old new-bee with Lionel trains.  I currently have a small collection of prewar and early postwar Lionel.  I would like to get a Lionel 263e Blue Comet however there is a variety of  versions available (originals, Lionel reissues, MTH, etc.).  I operate (not play with) my trains on the floor with tube track powered by a Lionel KW.  I am not interested in using anything except my KW to run trains.  Most newer replicas have various versions of sound and have smoke.   Smoke is desirable but sound with the exception of a whistle is not.  I have a Lionel 260 and 262 currently which run great but are not very good on pulling power.  I understand original 263Es are also prone to frame problems.  Did any manufacturers ever offer a replica without sound (except a whistle) that closely follow the construction of the original?  Any thoughts or guidance will be appreciated.

If you go to MTH's website and search for 263e you will get this list scroll down to the 11-6036-0 this might be close to what you are looking for? There are a few other 'Traditional' models also on the search list that you can look at. These two links will at least give you something to look at and compare features. Maybe that will get you started.

MTH has made several Tinplate models in both PS2/PS3 and also Traditional which is supposed to be similar to the originals. I don't know if the Traditional models have smoke? The PS2/PS3 models have all the electronic bells, whistles, smoke, sounds etc. You would want to add a FAST circuit breaker to your KW to protect the electronics if you go the PS2/PS3 route. I know little about Tinplate other than I like the looks of it (the reproductions) and would like to have some one of these days. I'm not even sure the one I linked to is a Blue Comet, but it appears to be of similar color to the ones I have seen.

Forgot to add, as far as I know MTH makes all the new tinplate available today, their Tinplate Traditions line and the Lionel Corp. line. The Lionel is made by MTH under license from Lionel. I believe they have also recently made some Ives models as well.

You're welcome. I have had good luck with MTH products. I have quite a few newer diesels and they are almost all MTH and PS3. I like the sounds and features the electronics provide. If your luck with MTH is as good as mine has been you will be happy. Good luck with your Blue Comet.

There are some very knowledgeable Tinplate folks here, maybe they will weigh in on you questions as well.
