This is my first post and I hope this is the correct place in the forum.  Attached are pictures of my father’s train which I would like to learn more about.  He has had it since about 1949 or ‘50.  The body of the train appears to be cast aluminum and is quite heavy. It still runs nicely.

I am most interested to learn when it was produced, by whom and any other history associated with it.  I would also appreciate opinions of value although I am not interested in parting with it but rather intend to keep it in the family.

If specific additional pictures would be helpful to you all, I can certainly upload more.

Thank you in advance for your help and thoughts.

Zach

bmoran4 is correct - it is an American Flyer Zephyr with a Lionel motor.  The Zephyr version you have is the second type first offered in 1935 - the difference is in the power car - the one you have (#9914) is wider than the 1934 version (#9910).  This change was made to permit the inclusion of an automatic reverse.  That power car was first cataloged as a 5 car set in 1935 so it would appear you are missing the baggage car (#9911).

Below is the catalog cut for 1935

P.S. The motor in your power car is a close match for the motor from the power car for the Lionel #1071E 027 streamliner set (based on the GM&O Rebel).  You can see a picture of it here.  That motor was used in a number of the lower priced Lionel sets.

Looks to be an American Flyer 9900 Zypher from ~1934 that has been re-motored with a later Lionel motor.

I don't know the year, it's prewar, but gee it say's Lionel right on the bottom.

I agree.  It's American Flyer that has been remotored.  Probably with a Flying Yankee motor assembly.  To the best of my knowledge, Lionel never made a prewar Burlington Pioneer Zephyr.
