This was a very tough choice.  I would be kicking and screaming, trying not to let go of my Spirit of the Century set.

I'm not picking on Keith in particular but I don't know how he could let go of that Custom Polar Express.  I'd probably keep my Legacy 1225 and an Ann Arbor engine but I don't know.  Several engines were gifts from my wife so it would be hard to choose between them.

I guess I would be having a fit about that one too   See, it's a hard decision.

My 1st Locomotive would be my be  the 226e that I got **** 1941. Dad had to order it from a hardware store some 500 miles from home and, because of the scarcity due to the war it came with 2800 series freights of different ages. It had the caboose and searchlight cars  with the 2 bar coupler head and the log dump and black hopper from  later production.  For the duration of the war I only saw it at Christmas. I still remember the smell as it came around the tree and the sizzle the old style lead tinsel made when it dropped on the tracks. The "V" transformer had a circuit breaker but the tinsel never tripped it.

No other locomotive has given me such pleasure but if I had to chose just one more I would probably go for a post war CC1. 2330 since my buddy had one and I truly lusted for it.

That 3rd Rail K2a is a must-have!

I like the K2a more than the J, probably just because the J has been done to death.  I've seen a number of photos showing a K2a on ACL tracks at the station in Petersburg.

When I was in elementary school we went on a train ride and I believe they used a K2a for power, but I can't recall for sure.

Both sure would look purty on any layout!

I find it interesting that roughly half of us are naming two real locomotives that we would want models of, while the other half are naming two particular model locomotives produced a particular manufacturer (most often Lionel). And that the second half more often than not names two Postwar locos. Shows the differing priorities of different model train enthusiasts!

I fall in the second camp. I would chose my 623 NW-2. Runs silky-smooth, and slow, using a PM-1.

Second?  Among locos we own, the Rock Island 5100 northern from 1987. Among locos we don't own... either a 736 or a 226e.

I would make my choices depending on the layout I was planning.
If I was doing a British themed layout I would use my two Lionel Shakespere Express Hall class 4-6-0s.

If I was doing a 1920's/30's logging rr I would use my Lionel 0-6-0t docksider and my K-line two truck Shay.

If I was doing New Haven I would use Mth DL109 and Williams J class as a I-5.

For three rail "Lionel" type chooch;... My Custom Trains FM with all the "stuff"

and a MILW.  2338 GEEP !

For everything else, including 12"/Ft.  ...Alco RS1, for everyday service ( hey, it's

steam without being steam )  and an EMD SD7 with DB, and 65:12 gears...for

when you need the sledgehammer!

You can accuse me of being a Dieselover...and you'd be right !!!

Very interesting topic.  I don't think that I could do just two engines!  Ya gotta have more than that.

But, I suppose that if I had to choose just two they would be the Hiawatha Atlantic and the Milwaukee S-3 Northern.  But wait...what about the BiPolar?  And the F-7 Hudson?  And the Milwaukee Box Cabs, and the Erie Builts or for that matter, the C-Liners? How about the Little Joes.............

Can't do it.  Impossible question!  Now, this is gonna keep me awake tonight.
