I got an interesting demo of electrical safety last night!  A dead tree branch fell on the 11KV lines on the road next to my house.  I first noticed extended lightning that lit the outside as bright as day with a flickering beat!  After a few seconds, the power went out and it went away.  That repeated for four or five times, I wish I had thought to take a video.  When I was looking out the window for the succeeding events, it was quite a light show!  The ball of fire seemed to travel up and down about a 50 foot stretch of the power lines for four or five seconds, then the lights would go out and of course everything was black.  After twenty-thirty seconds, the whole event repeated a few more times.  On later examination, the branch was pulling the three lines close together to create the arc, and then it would apparently travel up the grade like a Jacob's Ladder effect.

Of course, then the power company breakers decided there was really a problem and the power was totally out.  On the good side, it only took them less than two hours to respond and remove the tree limb to restore power.  I think there's a bit of energy in those 11KV lines!
