Here's a little goodie I picked up in the plumbing section of Home Depot yesterday. It works the same as an original Lionel Standard Gauge wheel puller. The pin is the correct diameter for the axles. The only significant difference is the price - I paid a bit over eleven dollars, including tax.

Do you think it would work for O gauge too?
Depends on exactly what you want to use it for. The pin mikes 0.128 or just a hair over 1/8". If your axles are bigger than that, it should work. I have no personal knowledge or experience rewheeling 0 gauge tinplate, so you're on your own. HD has a liberal refund policy and you don't have to destroy the package to get it out, so you can always buy it, try it, and return it if it doesn't work for you.
It's not bad unless the wheel is really frozen to the axle. The center pin has a tendency to bend on tough pulls. The pin on mine (old version) wasn't anywhere near the 1/8" and the main shaft was too big for most axles so the pin was needed. Maybe they have an improved version now?

I haven't tried pulling any wheels with mine.
I have noticed people selling them as standard gauge wheel pullers.
I doubt they would work for postwar (or newer) "O" gauge. There probably isn't enough space around or behind the wheels to get the jaws on. Then there is the diameter of the pin. Since I have an "O" gauge wheel puller, I never tried.
That is great, I will have to get one of those as I have been putting off getting a puller for some time. Thanks for the tip !!!
