Hi I am installing a diode ( 40amp 50v) to replace an old rectifier. The problem I'm having is the train stops when I turn the whistle control handle. Forward or reverse. train runs good,   Until I activate the whistle than it stops  I turned the voltage up same problem,.  Because of space requirements I had to move the rectifier bracket forward about 3/4 of a inch. I than had enough room for the diode. The copper strip that attached to the back of the old rectifier is now soldered to the diode. Any suggestions

Picture of what you did? Drawing?  It's more guess work without seeing what you did. All you should do is replace the diode (the disc only, not the resistance wire)

Backwards it should ring a bell on modern units, post war wont care and should whistle faced either way.

I tried to get to Olsen's Trains but couldn't. This one is from another thread
