A local guy has a baby state set and the 318e does not have the typical cream painted vents and windows. It has brass window inserts and vents are body color (brown).

According to Greenburg Vol I, there doesn't seem to be any known anomalies. My guess is that it is a repaint of another engine, and since the window inserts are brass, he didn't paint them.

Anyone ever hear of this anomaly?

I have had a few baby state locos with super motors. I believe these are non "E" versions. If I recall correctly they also had brass vents. I tried to find the pics, but they could be anywhere. Anything is possible, even if improbable. One important thing I can tell any collector is just because it is printed does not make it gospel! On the other hand it is always wise to be suspicious of "new variations."

Well, no, it's the E version and has definitely been repainted. And upon closer inspection of the photos, it is not even a good match to the cars. I agree that there are always anomalies in any collectible, because we always must remember that the manufacturer and/or seller was not interested in preserving the integrity of a collectible or history, they merely wanted to sell the product.
