I have a CAB-1, later model PM-1 with COMM/CONV switch and a ZW for power.  CAB-1 beeps when I press buttons.  When PM-1 is set to COMM, my conventional engines can be controlled by the ZW throttle.  But when I set the PM-1 to CONV, the CAB-1 controller does nothing.  How do I know if the CAB-1 is communicating with the PM-1?

Are you addressing the PM-1 base by first pressing TR on the CAB-1, followed by the assigned track number?

I always found the original TMCC hardware to be vague, even frustratingly so.  On the first generation grey Powermaster, there was an LED that blinked whenever a command was received.  I used to watch that LED, and not my train!

I always thought Lionel should have incorporated an optional "beep," the sound of an air blast let off from a brake valve, or some kind of audible cue in the loco, the base, or both to acknowledge receipt of a command.  (They could have also included a switch for those who wished to turn it off.)  Good luck!

Well, the primary use of the PowerMaster is for conventional running, those engines would have no idea a PowerMaster was in use.
