Can anyone tell me whether the Lionel HO Polar Express is bluetooth classic or bluetooth low energy?
What sort of range do you get when using the app to run the train?

While it is not specifically stated anywhere that I recall, I would say that BLE is used throughout the LionChief product line. It is defiantly used in the Universal remote. I can't see using a more expensive, less efficient system here where very little information has to be sent and there is no need for high end encryption.
As for range, these are class 2 devices, designed to operate at a minimum of 10 meters (33 feet), however I would expect a useable range of 45-60 feet if they used a quality BLE module, which it appears they did.
It is important to keep in mind that the range is also limited by your mobile device. As the app only currently exists for iOS devices this shouldn't be a problem, but when available for Android it may become one, as the BlueTooth radios in many cheaper devices may only barely meet the 10 meter requirement.
