My little story related to this set.  When I was a lad around the age of 10 or 11, I wanted this set but it was always beyond my price range.  I called all the local Pittsburgh stores to no avail.  I also was interested in the Santa Fe Double diesel set w/ freight so I was also asking about it.  I called Bill and Walt's in dahntahn Pittsburgh and lo and behold the Santa Fe's were in my price range.  Off we went.

When we got down there we asked for the set and the price was almost $50 more than I was told.  I was so disappointed.  Just then a gentleman walked by and asked what the issue was and the clerk told him that the set was quoted wrong.  The gentleman quickly replied that he quoted me the wrong price and give it to me for the price he quoted.  See if that happens these days.  I still wish it was the Amtrak set but the Santa Fe's are still kicking.

Actually, National Lampoon had the first Lionel Amtrak catalogue in October, 1973:

One thing you can say, P.J. O'Rourke knows his Lionel!  ;-)

The piggyback car is my favorite:  “Transport giants lock horns in cooperation.”    Includes a 5-member Teamster “inspection team” holding shotguns.

I miss humor like this.
