You should also consider buying the K-line version of this switch.  They are already set up to run on aux power if you want to and they have lights in the controller and the switch to signal the direction.  From everything I have read and know about them, they are superior to the lionel switches.  I have a bunch of them and they seem to work well.  I don't have any for sale though.  If you can find them they also offer a version with motor controls rather than solenoids.

Wow.  I really appreciate your post, C.Demille.  I really wish I would've posted on here much earlier than I did.  The K-Line looks far more desirable than the Lionel and here I already own a bunch of Lionels!  There is so much to learn in this hobby, but the first thing is patience!

I also have some of the K-line switches (some still new) but they are O gauge. I used adapter pins for them to mate with 0-27 track. They have the low profile motor so your longer cars will not hit the motor housing like that would on the lionel's.  I would be willing to sell those as well. attached is a picture of a right hand but I have left as well.
